Dada-led India edge Zimbabwe out

The match was attended by 9,638 people. While the innings of the team batting first commenced at 1:15pm and concluded at 4:45pm, the chase commenced at 5:30pm and concluded at 9pm.

India made just one change to their playing (Pat)eleven – Sachin Tendulkar made way for Parthiv. Zimbabwe made a couple of changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Vusi Sibanda and Stuart Matsikenyeri made way for Travis Friend and Dion Ebrahim. While Murali Kartik was India’s twelfth man, Sibanda was Zimbabwe’s twelfth man.

On winning the toss, Sourav Ganguly, India’s skipper, chose to bat. Patel, whose 29-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 19. Nine overs into the match, Heath Streak, Zimbabwe’s skipper, broke the 41-run stand.

India scored 50 off 11.2 overs in 53 minutes. Ganguly, whose 43-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 33. Thirty-three balls later, he was caught by Douglas Hondo. Sean Ervine broke the 26-run stand. 


V V S Laxman, whose 21-ball innings included a boundary, scored a dozen. Fourteen balls later, he was caught by Tatenda Taibu. Needless to say, Ervine was in seventh heaven. 


While India scored 100 off 20.2 overs in 102 minutes, they scored 150 off 33 overs in 134 minutes.


The fourth-wicket pair (Rahul Dravid and Yuvraj Singh, the player of the match) put on 100 off 127 balls in 74 minutes. Yuvraj, whose 76-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 69. His 50 – which included a couple of boundaries – came off 57 balls in 52 minutes. A hundred and forty-five balls later, Ray Price broke the 114-run stand.


The fifth-wicket pair (Dravid and Rohan Gavaskar) put on 50 off 39 balls in 28 minutes. Gavaskar, whose run-a-ball innings included a boundary and a six, scored 22. Eight overs later, Streak broke the 61-run partnership.


India scored 200 off 42.4 overs in 172 minutes. The sixth-wicket pair D(rav)idn’t get off the mark. The Wall, whose 106-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 84. His 50 – which included a boundary – came off 80 balls in 98 minutes. A couple of balls later, he was caught by Streak off the bowling of Ervine.


India scored 250 off 49.4 overs in 203 minutes. Hemang Badani, who faced a ball, scored a run. He was unbeaten, as was Irfan Pathan, who scored five. His three-ball innings included a boundary.


Zimbabwe conceded 10 extras. India scored 255 for the loss of half-a-dozen wickets off 50 overs. Douglas Hondo, who faced half-a-dozen wicketless overs, conceded 39. Andy Blignaut and Grant Flower bowled seven wicketless overs apiece. While the former conceded 44, the latter conceded 31.


Price, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 43. He picked up a wicket. Streak bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 48, picking up a couple of wickets. Ervine, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 47. He picked up three scalps.


Zimbabwe had scored 28 without the loss of a wicket when Mark Vermeulen – who had scored 14 – had to retire hurt, because he was hit on the helmet by a rising ball from Pathan. His 18-ball innings included a couple of boundaries.


They scored 50 off 11.5 overs in 53 minutes. The first-wicket pair put on 66. Although his 19-ball innings included a boundary, Friend had no reason to be in seventh heaven – 93 balls into the chase, Ganguly ran him out.


Flower, whose 64-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 36. Fourteen balls later, he was caught by Laxman. Ashish Nehra broke the four-run stand. Blignaut, who faced three balls, scored a run. Half-a-dozen balls later, he was caught by Yuvraj. Lakshmipathy Balaji broke the three-run stand.


Streak, who faced 13 balls, scored three. Twenty-two balls later, Ganguly broke the eight-ball stand. Zimbabwe scored 100 off 28.1 overs in 124 minutes. Rain interrupted play between 7:31pm and 8:20pm. They had scored 106 for the loss of four wickets off 29.5 overs at that point. No overs were lost.


Taibu, who faced 36 balls, scored 15. Seventy-four balls later, he was caught by Ganguly. Laxman broke the 47-run partnership. Stuart Carlisle, who faced 61 balls, scored 34. Seven balls later, he was caught by Patel. Ganguly broke the 20-run stand.


Zimbabwe scored 150 off 37.3 overs in 166 minutes. Ervine, whose 27-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 39. Forty balls later, he was caught by Ganguly. Balaji broke the 49-run stand.


Zimbabwe scored 200 off 43.5 overs in 199 minutes. Ebrahim, whose 30-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 39. Twenty balls later, he was caught by Ganguly. Pathan broke the 34-run stand.


Price, whose 12-ball innings included a boundary, scored 18. He was unbeaten. The last-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Hondo, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. The next ball, Anil Kumble and Ganguly ran him out.


India conceded 25 extras. Zimbabwe, who were dismissed for 231 off 47.1 overs, lost by 24 runs. The (Kumb)leggie bowled 10 wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 44. Nehra bowled nine overs, including a maiden. He conceded 44, picking up a wicket.


Pathan bowled nine overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 40, picking up a wicket. Balaji, who bowled 9.1 overs, conceded 37. He picked up a couple of wickets. Ganguly, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 55. He picked up three scalps.
