India, led by Dada, (Ki)win

The match was attended by 19,352 people. India made a couple of changes to their playing (Pat)eleven – Parthiv and Ajit Agarkar made way for Sachin Tendulkar and Anil Kumble. New Zealand made three changes to their playing eleven – Craig McMillan, Jacob Oram and Kyle Mills made way for the Chrises (Harris and Cairns) and Shane Bond.

While Mills was New Zealand’s twelfth man, Harbhajan Singh was India’s twelfth man. On winning the toss, Stephen Fleming, New Zealand’s skipper, chose to bat. Their openers didn’t get off the mark. Nathan, who faced a couple of balls, didn’t open his account. Eight balls later, he was trapped (Ast)leg before wicket by Zaheer Khan, the player of the match.

The second-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Mathew Sinclair, who didn’t face a ball, didn’t open his account. The next ball, he was dismissed by Khan. Harris, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored a run. Thirteen balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Khan, who broke the three-run stand.

Cairns, whose (Srina)thirty-two-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 25. Fifty-seven balls later, Javagal broke the 45-run stand. New Zealand’s 50 came off 88 balls in 70 minutes. Fleming, whose 41-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 19. Ten balls later, he was caught by Rahul Dravid. Ashish Nehra broke the three-run stand.

Scott Styris, whose 33-ball innings included a boundary, scored 13. Fifty-two balls later, Nehra broke the 41-run stand. New Zealand’s 100 came off 154 balls in 126 minutes.

Andre Adams, whose 27-ball innings included three boundaries and as many sixes, scored 35. Fifty balls later, he was caught by Mohammad Kaif. Sourav Ganguly, India’s skipper, broke the 48-run stand.

New Zealand’s 150 came off 227 balls in 171 minutes. Brendon McCullum, whose 73-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 35. Forty-two balls later, Kumble broke the 18-run stand. Daniel Vettori, who faced 31 balls, scored 16. He was unbeaten.

Daryl Tuffey, who faced nine balls, scored four. Fifteen balls later, Srinath broke the nine-run stand. Bond had no reason to be in seventh heaven – he didn’t open his account. He was trapped (Kumb)leg before wicket by the leggie, who broke the 0ne-run stand.

India conceded 20 extras. New Zealand were dismissed for 168 off 42.4 overs. Ganguly, who bowled half-a-dozen overs, conceded 27. He picked up a wicket. Nehra bowled nine overs, including a maiden. He conceded 38, picking up a couple of wickets.

Kumble, who bowled 9.4 overs, conceded 38. He picked up a couple of wickets, as did Srinath, who bowled 10 overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 24. Khan, who bowled eight overs, conceded 30. He picked up three scalps.

India’s openers didn’t get off the mark. Ganguly, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. A ball into the match, he was caught by McCullum off the bowling of Tuffey. Dinesh Mongia, who faced 10 balls, scored a couple. Twenty-one balls later, Bond broke the 19-run stand.

Tendulkar, who faced 10 balls, didn’t get off the mark. Fourteen balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Bond, who broke the six-run stand. India’s 50 came off 53 balls in 43 minutes.

Virender Sehwag, whose 40-ball innings included nine boundaries, scored 45. Thirty-nine balls later, he was caught by Fleming. Styris broke the 41-run stand.

India’s 100 came off 155 balls in 117 minutes. Mohammad Kaif, who faced 13 balls, scored just a run. Twenty-nine balls later, he was caught by Fleming. Adams broke the 23-run stand. Kumble, who faced 10 balls, scored a couple. Fourteen balls later, he was dismissed hit wicket by Adams, who broke the two-run stand.

India’s 150 came off 234 balls in 177 minutes. Yuvraj Singh, whose 85-ball innings included eight boundaries, scored 54. His 50 came off 79 balls in 11 minutes. Sixty-three balls later, he was caught by Harris. Vettori broke the 44-run stand.

Khan, whose 42-ball innings included three boundaries and the only six of the innings, scored 34. He was unbeaten. Srinath, who scored a run, was unbea‘ten’. New Zealand conceded 23 extras. India, who scored 169 for the loss of eight wickets off 43.2 overs, won by a couple of wickets with 40 balls to spare.

Vettori bowled five wickets, including a maiden. He conceded 14, picking up a wicket. Tuffey bowled 10 overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 40, picking up a wicket.

Styris bowled nine overs, including a maiden. He conceded 29, picking up a couple of wickets. Adams, who bowled 9.2 overs, conceded 47. He picked up a couple of wickets. Bond, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 34. He picked up a couple of wickets.

The New Zealanders led the seven-match series 4-1.
