No-reSuLt final disappoints Dada-led India

India made three changes to their playing eleven – V V S Laxman, Anil Kumble and Ashish Nehra made way for Dinesh Mongia, Ajit Agarkar and Javagal Srinath.

Sri Lanka made four Cha(mara)nges to their playing eleven – Nuwan Zoysa, Silva, Thilan Samaraweera and Upul Chandana made way for Aravinda de Silva, Muttiah Muralitharan, Kumar Dharmasena and Pulasthi Gunaratne.

On winning the toss, Sanath Jayasuriya, Sri Lanka’s skipper, chose to bat. Marvan Atapattu, whose 46-ball innings included five boundaries, scored 34. Seventy-seven balls into the match, he was caught by Ajit Agarkar. Harbhajan Singh broke the 65-run partnership.

Jayasuriya, whose 89-ball innings included seven boundaries, scored 74. A hundred and seven balls later, he was caught by Harbhajan. Agarkar broke the 90-run partnership. De Silva, who faced 25 balls, scored 18. Forty-eight balls later, he was caught by Rahul Dravid. Harbhajan broke the 30-run stand.

Kumar Sangakkara, whose 89-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 54. Thirty-four balls later, he was caught by Virender Sehwag. Harbhajan broke the 22-run stand.

Jayawardene, who faced 20 balls, scored 13. Eight balls (Mahe)later, he was caught by Sachin Tendulkar, who broke the five-run stand. Russel Arnold, whose run-a-ball innings included a boundary, scored 18. He was unbeaten, as was Chaminda Vaas, who faced 13 balls, scoring 11.

India conceded 22 extras. Sri Lanka scored 244 for the loss of five wickets off 50 overs. Srinath bowled eight wicketless overs, conceding 55. Zaheer Khan and Sehwag bowled 10 wicketless overs apiece. While the former conceded 43, the latter conceded 32.

Agarkar and Tendulkar bowled half-a-dozen overs each, picking up a wicket apiece. While the former conceded 37, the latter conceded 36. Harbhajan bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 27, picking up three scalps.

Mongia faced seven balls, scoring a run. He was unbeaten, as was Sehwag, who scored 13. His five-ball innings included three boundaries. India scored 14 without the loss of a wicket off a couple of overs. While Vaas bowled a maiden, Gunaratne bowled an over, conceding 14.

Rain forced the match to be replayed the following day.
