Despite unS(our)avoury circumstances, India WIn

India made just one change to their playing eleven – Anil Kumble made for Jai Prakash Yadav. The West Indies made (Ricar)do changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Carl Hooper and Corey Collymore made way for Powell and Cameron Cuffy.

On winning the toss, Sourav Ganguly, India’s skipper, inserted the visitors. Wavell Hinds, whose 28-ball innings included a boundary, scored 10. Fifty-one balls later, he was caught by V V S Laxman. Javagal broke the (Srina)thirty-six-run stand.

Marlon Samuels, whose 18-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 16. Fifty balls later, he was caught by Rahul Dravid. Ganguly broke the 57-run partnership. Chris Gayle, whose 72-ball innings included a dozen boundaries and a couple of sixes, scored 72. Twenty-seven balls, Harbhajan Singh broke the 26-run partnership.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul, whose 77-ball innings included eight boundaries, scored 77. A hundred and forty-five balls later, he was caught by Yadav. Harbhajan broke the 149-run partnership.

Ramnaresh Sarwan, whose 88-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries and a couple of sixes, scored 84. Seven balls later, he was caught by Dravid. Ashish Nehra broke the four-run stand.

Powell, whose 18-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 19. He was unbeaten, as was Ridley Jacobs, the West Indies’ stand-in skipper, who wasn’t in seventh heaven, because he scored just nine.

India conceded 16 extras. The West Indies scored 300 for the loss of five wickets off 50 overs. Yadav, who bowled a couple of wicketless overs, conceded 14. Ajit Agarkar and Virender Sehwag, the player of the match, bowled half-a-dozen wicketless overs apiece. While the former conceded 63, the latter conceded 29.

Ganguly, who bowled seven overs, conceded 30. He picked up a wicket. Srinath, who bowled nine overs, conceded 46. He picked up a wicket. Nehra, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 56. He picked up a wicket. Harbhajan, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 59. He picked up two scalps.

Owing to crowd trouble, the hosts’ target was revised to 120 off 27.1 overs. Ganguly, whose 83-ball innings included nine boundaries, scored 72. A hundred and sixty balls into the chase, he was caught by Chanderpaul. Vasbert Drakes broke the 196-run partnership.

Sehwag, whose 82-ball innings included 17 boundaries and a couple of sixes, scored 114. He was unbeaten, as was Laxman, who faced a couple of balls, and didn’t open his account.

The West Indies conceded 14 extras. India, who scored 200 for the loss of one wicket off 27.1 overs, won by 81 runs under the Duckworth-Lewis method.

Gayle, who bowled a wicketless over, conceded 18. Samuels bowled 3.1 wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 16. Mahendra Nagamootoo, who bowled five wicketless overs, conceded 43.

Cuffy and Mervyn Dillon bowled half-a-dozen wicketless overs apiece. While the former conceded 41, the latter conceded 40. Drakes, who bowled half-a-dozen overs, conceded 36. He picked up the only wicket to fall.

The West Indies led the seven-match series 2-1.
