Dada-led India rout the Bangladeshis

It was India’s first One-day International for 2003. They made four changes to their playing (Pat)eleven – Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Javagal Srinath and Ashish Nehra made way for a couple of One-day International debutants (Gautam Gambhir and Aavishkar Salvi), Parthiv and Ajit Agarkar.

Bangladesh (Moham)made seven changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Shahriar Hossain, Javed Omar, Habibul Bashar, Aminul Islam, Naimur Rahman, Enamul Haque and Mushfiqur Rahman made way for Ashraful, Mehrab Hossain, Tushar Imran, Alok Kapali, Sanwar Hossain, Mahmud [who (Kha)led the team] and Tapash Baisya.

On winning the toss, Sourav Ganguly, India’s skipper, chose to bat. Gambhir, whose 22-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 11. Fifty-six balls into the match, he was caught by Khaled Mashud. Baisya broke the 46-run stand.

Virender Sehwag, whose 51-ball innings included 11 boundaries and a six, scored 63. Twenty-five balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Mohammad Rafique, who broke the 46-run stand.

Ganguly, whose 45-ball innings included a boundary and a couple of sixes, scored 30. Seventy-six balls later, he was caught by Rafique. Kapali broke the 50-run partnership. Mohammad Kaif, whose 47-ball innings included a boundary, scored 23. Twenty-three balls later, he was caught by Mashud. Sanwar broke the 12-run stand.

Yuvraj Singh, the player of the match, scored 102. His 85-ball innings included nine boundaries and for sixes. He was unbeaten. Dinesh Mongia, who faced eight balls, scored three. Twenty-five balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Kapali, who broke the 18-run stand.

Patel, who faced 11 balls, scored four. Twenty-three balls later, he was caught by Sanwar, who broke the 10-run stand. Agarkar, whose 23-ball innings included a six, scored 20. Fifty-seven balls later, he was caught by Imran. Mahmud broke the 92-run partnership.

Harbhajan Singh, who faced five balls, scored three. Eight balls later, Baisya had a reason to be in seventh heaven. The ninth-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Zaheer Khan, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. The next ball, he was dismissed by Baisya.

Salvi, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. Three balls later, he was caught by Kapali. Mahmud broke the five-run stand. Bangladesh conceded 17 extras. India were dismissed for 276 off 49.3 overs.

Manjural Islam, who faced half-a-dozen wicketless overs, conceded 31. Rafique, who bowled eight overs, conceded 52. He picked up a wicket. Mahmud, who bowled 7.3 overs, conceded 46. He picked up a couple of wickets. 

Sanwar Hossain, who bowled eight overs, conceded 35. He picked up a couple of wickets, as did Kapali, who bowled 10 overs, conceding 42. Baisya, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 65. He picked up three scalps.

Mehrab, who faced four balls, didn’t get off the mark. Five balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Salvi, who broke the two-run stand. Imran, who faced three balls, scored a couple. Three balls later, Khan broke the run-a-ball stand.

Ashraful, whose 10-ball innings included a boundary, scored five. Twenty balls later, he was caught by Sehwag. The Mumbaikar broke the (Sal)VI-run stand. Kapali, who faced 30 balls, scored five. Twenty-eight balls later, he was caught by Salvi. Khan broke the 13-run stand.

Mashud, whose 21-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored a dozen. Twenty balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Agarkar, who broke the 13-run stand. Akram Khan, whose 24-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored nine. Twenty-six balls later, he was caught by Patel. Agarkar broke the six=run stand.

The seventh-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Sanwar, who faced 14 balls, didn’t open his account. Three balls later, he was caught by Gambhir off the bowling of Harbhajan. Mahmud, whose 20-ball innings included a boundary, scored 10. Thirty-two balls later, he was caught by Patel. Agarkar broke the 22-run stand.

Rafique, whose 21-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and the only six of the innings, scored 18. He was unbeaten. Baisya, who faced 10 balls, scored a couple. Fourteen balls later, he was caught by Patel. Khan broke the nine-run stand. 

Islam, who faced 10 balls, scored a run. Fourteen balls later, he was caught by Harbhajan. Khan broke the two-run stand. India scored a dozen extras. Bangladesh, who were bundled out for a paltry 76 off 27.3 overs, lost by 200 runs.

Harbhajan bowled half-a-dozen overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 19, picking up a wicket. Salvi bowled seven overs, including a maiden. He conceded 15, picking up a couple of wickets.

Agarkar bowled seven overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 18, picking up three wickets. Khan bowled 7.3 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 19, picking up four scalps.
