Ganguly-led India, England share points

While India made no changes to their playing eleven, England made a couple of changes to the (Micha)eleven that last played the Indians – Graham Thorpe and Matthew Hoggard made way for Vaughan and Darren Gough.

On winning the toss, Sourav Ganguly, India’s skipper, chose to bat. India’s openers didn’t get off the mark. Ganguly, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. A ball into the match, he was trapped leg before wicket by Gough.

Virender Sehwag, whose 19-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 16. Forty-seven balls later, he was caught by Marcus Trescothick. James Kirtley broke the 48-run stand. Dinesh Mongia, whose 38-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 27. Fourteen balls later, he was caught by Andrew Flintoff. Gough broke the four-run stand.

Tendulkar, whose 108-ball (Sach)innings included eight boundaries and a six, scored 105. He was unbeaten. His 100 – which included seven boundaries and the six – came off 106 balls in 161 minutes.

Rahul Dravid, whose 117-ball innings included seven boundaries, scored 82. Two hundred and five balls later, he was caught by Flintoff. Paul Collingwood broke the 169-run partnership. Yuvraj Singh, whose 19-ball innings included four boundaries and a six, scored 40. He was unbeaten.

England conceded 15 extras. India scored 285 for the loss of four wickets off 50 overs. Ashley Giles bowled five wicketless overs, conceding 41. Flintoff bowled 10 wicketless overs, conceding 36. Ronnie Irani bowled 10 wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 23.

Collingwood bowled five overs, conceding 48, He picked up a wicket, as did Kirtley, who bowled 10 overs, conceding 77. Gough bowled 10 overs, conceding 52. He picked up a couple of scalps.

Trescothick, whose 26-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 23. Thirty-four balls into the chase, he was trapped leg before wicket by Zaheer Khan, who broke the 30-run stand. Nick Knight, whose 28-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 17. He was unbeaten, as was Nasser Hussain, England’s skipper. He faced 21 balls, scoring nine.

India conceded four extras. England scored 53 for the loss of one wicket off 12,3 overs. Ajit Agarkar bowled three dot balls. He was wicketless, as was Ashish Nehra, who bowled half-a-dozen overs, conceded 21. Khan bowled half-a-dozen overs, conceding 31. He picked up the only wicket to fall.

Owing to rain, the match ended without a result. Both the teams shared two points apiece.
