SA (Sour)avenge loss to India

India made a couple of changes to their playing eleven – Abhijit Kale and Amit Mishra made way for Sourav Ganguly (who was leading the team, and chose to bat on winning the toss) and Harbhajan Singh.

South Africa made way for a couple of changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Robin Peterson and Charl Willoughby made way for Andrew Hall and Paul Adams.

Gautam Gambhir, who faced 11 balls, scored a couple. Twenty balls later, he was caught by Hall. Needless to say, Makhaya Ntini was in seventh heaven. The second-wicket pair had put on 25 when Virender Sehwag retired hurt. He was batting on 14 at that point. He returned when India had scored 146 for the loss of four wickets.

Mohammad Kaif, whose 49-ball innings included four boundaries, scored four, scored 30. A hundred and twenty balls after Gambhir’s dismissal, Alan Dawson broke the 89-run partnership. Ganguly, whose 83-ball inning included half-a-dozen boundaries and a six, scored 61. Forty-one balls later, he was caught by Shaun Pollock. Adams broke the 28-run stand.

Sanjay Bangar, who faced 21 balls, scored (Nti)nine. Thirty-five balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by the fast bowler, who broke the 22-run stand. Sehwag, whose 30-ball innings included three boundaries and a six, scored 25. Eleven balls later, he was caught by Graeme Smith, South Africa’s skipper. Hall broke the 14-run stand.

Dinesh Mongia, who faced 46 balls, scored 29. Thirty balls later, he was caught by Neil McKenzie, the player of the match. Dawson broke the 22-run stand. Ajit Agarkar, whose 26-ball innings included a boundary and a six, scored 17. Half-a dozen balls later, he was caught by Hall. Ntini broke the two-run stand.

Harbhajan Singh, who faced a couple of balls, scored a run. Four balls later, he was caught by Mark Boucher. Dawson broke the 0ne-run stand. The ninth-wicket pair put on half-a-dozen. Parthiv, whose run-a-ball innings included a boundary, scored half-a-dozen. (Pat)Eleven balls later, Herschelle Gibbs and Boucher ran him out.

Sarandeep Singh, whose 20-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 19. Nineteen balls later, he was caught by Smith. Dawson broke the 23-run stand. Aavishkar Salvi, who faced nine balls, scored four. He was unbeaten.

South Africa conceded a dozen extras. India were dismissed for 215 off 49.1 overs. Pollock bowled 10 wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 48. Adams and Hall bowled 10 overs, including a maiden, each, picking up a wicket apiece. While the former conceded 43, the latter conceded 36.

Ntini, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 37. He picked up three wickets. Dawson bowled 9.1 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 49, picking up four scalps.

Smith, who faced 13 balls, scored a couple. Twenty-five balls into the chase, he was caught by Patel. Salvi broke the 11-run stand. Boeta Dippenaar, whose 20-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 11. Forty-three balls later, Harbhajan broke the 30-run stand.

Gibbs, whose 37-ball innings included five boundaries, scored 25. A couple of balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Harbhajan Singh, who broke the 0ne-run stand. Jacques Rudolph, whose 64-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 37. A hundred and fifteen balls later, he was caught by Kaif. Sehwag broke the 63-run partnership.

McKenzie, whose 107-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries, scored 80. Ninety-nine balls later, he was caught by Salvi. Harbhajan broke the 107-run partnership. Boucher, whose 49-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 44. He was unbeaten, as was Pollock, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scoring a couple.

India conceded 15 extras. South Africa conceded 216 for the loss of five wickets off 48.4 overs, winning by five wickets with eight balls to spare. Mongia and Ganguly bowled three wicketless overs apiece. While the former conceded 19, the latter conceded 13. Agarkar bowled half-a-dozen wicketless overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 34.

Sarandeep, who bowled 10 wicketless overs, conceded 32. Sehwag, who bowled eight overs, conceded 43. He picked up a wicket, as did Salvi, who bowled 8.4 overs, including two maidens. He conceded 31. Harbhajan, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 43. He picked up three scalps.
