Dada-led India don’t (Ki)win year-ender

It was India’s last One-day International for 2002. The match was attended by 11,376 people. The Indians made a couple of changes to their playing eleven – Shiv Sunder Das and Anil Kumble made way for Sanjay Bangar and Harbhajan Singh.

New Zealand made just one change to the eleven that last played the Indians – Shane Bond made way for Paul Hitchcock. While Bond was New Zealand’s twelfth man, Ajit Agarkar was India’s twelfth man.


On winning the toss, Sourav Ganguly, India’s skipper, inserted the hosts. Stephen Fleming, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored a run. Seventeen balls into the match, he was caught by Mohammad Kaif. Javagal Srinath broke the 10-run stand.


New Zealand’s 50 came off 13.5 overs. Nathan Astle, whose 95-ball innings included five boundaries and a six, scored 76. His 50 – which included four boundaries – came off 71 balls. A hundred and eighty-one balls later, he was caught by Zaheer Khan. Ganguly broke the 136-run partnership.


Craig McMillan had no reason to be in seventh heaven – he scored five. (Srina)Thirteen balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Javagal.


Mathew Sinclair, whose 126-ball innings included four boundaries and a six, scored 78. His 50 – which included a couple of boundaries and a six – came off 90 balls. Forty-three balls later, he was caught by Rahul Dravid. Harbhajan Singh broke the 42-run stand.


The fifth-wicket pair put on five. Jacob Oram, who faced seven balls, scored four. Nine balls later, Srinath ran him out. Vincent, whose 32-ball innings incL(o)uded a couple of boundaries, scored 34. Srinath broke the 20-run stand.


Brendon McCullum, who faced a dozen balls, scored seven. Seven balls later, he was caught by Yuvraj Singh. Khan broke the nine-run stand. Kyle Mills, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored five. Five balls later, Khan broke the four-run stand.


Daniel, whose V(ettor)I-ball innings included a boundary, scored nine. He was unbeaten. Daryl Tuffey, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored five. Eleven balls later, Khan broke the 15-run stand. Hitchcock, who faced a ball, scored a couple. He was unbeaten.


India conceded 28 extras. New Zealand scored 254 for the loss of nine wickets off 50 overs. Sanjay Bangar, who bowled seven overs, conceded 34. He was wicketless, as was Ashish Nehra, who bowled eight overs, conceded 42.


Ganguly, who bowled five overs, conceded 23. He picked up a wicket, as was Harbhajan, who bowled 10 overs, conceding 56. Khan and Srinath bowled 10 overs each, picking up three scalps apiece. While the former conceded 47, the latter conceded 34.


India were fined a couple of overs for a slow over rate. Their openers didn’t get off the mark. Ganguly, who faced three balls, didn’t open his account. Three balls into the chase, he was dismissed by Tuffey.


V V S Laxman, whose 39-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 20. His innings included an all-run four. Eighty-seven balls later, he was caught by McCullum. Mills broke the 57-run partnership.


The third-wicket pair put on 47. Dravid, whose 27-ball innings included a boundary, scored 18. Fifty-five balls later, Fleming and McCullum ran him out.


The fourth-wicket pair didn’t open his account. Yuvraj, who faced a couple of balls, didn’t get off the mark. A couple of balls later, he was stumped by McCullum off the bowling of Vettori.


Kaif, whose 38-ball innings included a boundary, scored 24. A dozen overs later, he was caught by McCullum. Tuffey broke the 78-run partnership.


Bangar scored four. His five-ball innings included a boundary. Half-a-dozen balls later, he was caught by McCullum. Oram broke the five-run stand.


The seventh-wicket pair put on 17. Virender Sehwag, the player of the match, scored 108. His 119-ball innings included nine boundaries and a couple of sixes. While his 50 – which included half-a-dozen boundaries – came off 74 balls, his 100 came off 111 balls. Three overs later, Tuffey ran him out.


Harbhajan Singh, whose 17-ball innings included a boundary and a six, scored 14. Four balls later, he was caught by McCullum. Hitchcock broke the two-run stand.


Srinath, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored three. Sixteen balls later, he was caught by Oram. Mills broke the 11-run stand.


Khan, whose 13-ball innings included a boundary, scored 11. A couple of balls later, he was caught by McMillan. Mills broke the run-a-ball stand. Ashish Nehra, who didn’t face a ball, was unbeaten.


New Zealand conceded 17 extras. India, who were dismissed for 219 off 43.4 overs, lost by 35 runs. Oram, Vettori and Hitchcock bowled eight overs each, picking up a wicket apiece. They conceded 50, 48 and 38, respectively.


Tuffey bowled 10 overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 35, picking up a couple of wickets. Mills, who bowled 9.4 overs, conceded 45. He picked up three scalps.


New Zealand led the seven-match series 2-0.
