Dada-led India do not (Ki)win

It was India’s last One-day International before the 2003 World Cup in South Africa. India made a couple of changes to their playing eleven – Sanjay Bangar and Ajit Agarkar made way for Dinesh Mongia and Anil Kumble. New Zealand made one change to their playing (Dani)eleven – Shane Bond made way for Vettori.

While Harbhajan Singh was India’s twelfth man, Paul Hitchcock was New Zealand’s twelfth man. On winning the toss, Stephen Fleming, New Zealand’s skipper, inserted the Indians.

Their openers batted for 23 minutes. Virender Sehwag, who faced 19 balls, scored four. Thirty-three balls into the match, he was caught by Brendon McCullum. Kyle Mills broke the 14-run stand.

The second-wicket pair batted for seven minutes. Sachin Tendulkar, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored a run. Seven balls later, he was caught by Fleming. Daryl Tuffey broke the three-run stand. 

The third-wicket pair, who batted for just a minute, didn’t get off the mark. Mongia, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. The next ball, he was caught by Fleming off the bowling of Tuffey.

India scored 39 off 13 overs in the first hour. The fourth-wicket pair batted for 30 minutes. Rahul Dravid, whose 26-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored a dozen. Forty-three balls later, he was caught by Scott Styris. Mills broke the 27-run stand.

The fifth-wicket pair, who batted for a couple of minutes, didn’t get off the mark. Sourav Ganguly, whose 39-ball innings included a boundary, scored 15. Four balls later, he was dismissed by Andre Adams.

The sixth-wicket pair, who batted for eight minutes, didn’t get off the mark. Mohammad Kaif, who faced half-a-dozen balls, didn’t open his account. A dozen balls later, he was caught by McCullum off the bowling of Adams.

India scored 36 off 14 overs in the second hour. Their 50 came off 95 balls in 121 minutes. The seventh-wicket pair batted for 69 minutes. Yuvraj Singh, whose 58-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 33. A hundred and one balls later, he was caught by Lou Vincent. Styris broke the 49-run stand.

The eighth-wicket pair batted for 15 minutes. Zaheer Khan, whose 15-ball innings included a boundary, scored five. Twenty-two balls later, he was caught by McCullum. Styris broke the six-run stand.

India’s 100 came off 167 balls in 229 minutes. They scored 42 off 15 overs in the third hour. The ninth-wicket pair batted for 20 minutes. Kumble, whose 70-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 21. Thirty-four balls later, he was caught by Fleming. Adams broke the 18-run stand.

The tenth-wicket pair batted for seven minutes. Javagal, whose 26-ball innings included (Srina)three boundaries, scored 15. A dozen balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Adams, who broke the five-run stand. Ashish Nehra, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored a couple. He was unbeaten.

New Zealand conceded 14 extras. India were dismissed for 122 off 44.5 overs. Vettori, who bowled half-a-dozen wicketless overs, conceded 18. Mills and Tuffey bowled 10 overs, including a maiden, each, picking up a couple of wickets apiece. While the former conceded 29, the latter conceded 26.

Styris bowled 10 overs, including four overs. He conceded 23, picking up a couple of wickets. Adams bowled 8.5 overs, including three overs. He conceded 21, picking up four scalps.

Fleming, whose 92-ball innings included eight boundaries, scored 50. His 50 – which included seven boundaries – came off 85 balls in 123 minutes. He was unbeaten.

New Zealand’s openers batted for 11 minutes. Mathew Sinclair, who faced four balls, scored three. Thirteen balls later, Srinath broke the five-run stand.

The second-wicket pair batted for half-a-dozen minutes. McCullum, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored four. His runs came by way of a boundary. Seven balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Khan, who broke the run-a-ball stand.

The third-wicket pair batted for 17 minutes. Chris Cairns, whose 12-ball innings included a boundary, scored 11. Twenty balls later, Srinath broke the run-a-ball stand.

While New Zealand’s 50 came off 58 balls in 52 minutes, their 100 came off 150 balls in 120 minutes. They scored 56 off a dozen overs in the first hour, and 44 off 13 overs in the second hour.

The fourth-wicket pair (Fleming and Styris) batted for 95 minutes. They put on 50 off 75 balls in 59 minutes. Styris, whose 53-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 29. A hundred and twenty-five balls later, Kumble broke the 84-run partnership.

The fifth-wicket pair, who batted for half-a-dozen minutes, put on nine. Vincent, whose six-ball innings included a boundary, scored five. He was unbeaten.

India conceded 13 extras. New Zealand, who scored 125 for the loss of four wickets off 28.4 overs, won by half-a-dozen wickets with 128 balls to spare. Ganguly, who bowled a couple of overs, conceded nine. He was wicketless, as was Nehra, who bowled five wicketless overs, conceding 28.

Kumble, who bowled four overs, conceded 16. He picked up a wicket, as did Khan, who bowled nine overs, including two maidens. He conceded 38. Srinath bowled 8.4 overs, including two maidens. He conceded 28, picking up a couple of scalps. His spell included a wide, which was worth a couple of runs.

New Zealand won the seven-match series 5-2.
