No reSuLt leaves India Devastated

India and Sri Lanka made no changes to their playing elevens. On winning the toss, Duleep Mendis, the latter’s skipper, inserted the visitors, whose innings was reduced to 40 overs. Krishnamachari Srikkanth, who faced 25 balls, scored eight. Ashantha de Mel broke the 25-run stand.

The second-wicket partnership was worth 30. Mohammad Azharuddin, who faced 10 balls, scored 13. He was run out. Ravi Shastri scored 45. His 69-ball innings included a couple of boundaries. Rumesh Ratnayake trapped him leg before wicket, breaking the 29-run stand.

Mohinder Amarnath, who faced 10 balls, scored five. He was caught by Amal Silva. Rumesh broke the 18-run partnership.

Kapil Dev, India’s skipper, scored a dozen. His 15-ball innings included a boundary. He was caught by Roger Wijesuriya. Arjuna Ranatunga broke the fifth-wicket partnership, which was worth 33.

Dilip Vengsarkar, who was adjudged the player of the match and the player of the series, scored 55. His run-a-ball innings included three boundaries. Ravi Ratnayake broke the 38-run partnership.

Sunil Gavaskar scored 39. His 44-ball innings included three boundaries. He was unbeaten, as was Roger Binny, who scored eight. His 12-ball innings included a boundary.

Sri Lanka conceded nine extras. India scored 194 for the loss of six wickets off 40 overs. Wijesuriya bowled four overs, conceding 23. He was wicketless, as was Vinothen John, who bowled eight overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 22.

Ranatunga bowled six overs, conceding 23. He picked up a wicket, as did Ravi who bowled seven overs. He conceded 38.

Owing to rain and bad light, Sri Lanka’s target was revised – they had to score 72 off 15 overs. Silva, who faced four balls, scored just a run. Dev broke the four-run stand.

The second-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Aravinda de Silva faced half-a-dozen balls, scoring just a couple. He was caught by Vengsarkar off the bowling of Chetan Sharma.

Roy Dias scored a dozen. His 20-ball innings included a boundary. He was caught by Dev. Chetan broke the 22-run stand. Mendis, who faced 22 balls, scored 14. His innings included a boundary. He was unbeaten.

Ranjan Madugalle, who faced three balls, scored just a run. He was caught by Viswanath. Dev broke the fourth-wicket S(t)(adan)and, which was worth half-a-dozen. Ranatunga, who faced a ball, did not get off the mark. He was unbeaten.

The Indians conceded just a couple of extras. The Sri Lankans scored 32 for the loss of four wickets off 9.2 overs. Dev, who bowled five overs, conceded 20. He picked up a couple of scalps, as did Chetan, who bowled 4.2 overs, conceding 11.

The match ended without a result, and the three-match series was drawn 1-1.
