India register a (Ka)p(i)leasing (Ki)win

India made a couple of changes to their playing eleven – Rajinder Singh Ghai and Laxman Sivaramakrishnan made way for Chetan Sharma and One-day International debutant Shivlal Yadav.

New Zealand made five changes – Paul McEwan, Geoff Howarth, Ian Smith, Lance Cairns and Martin Snedden made way for the two Bruces (Edgar and Blair), Ervin McSweeney, debutant Stu Gillespie and Stephen Boock.

On winning the toss, Kapil Dev, India’s skipper, inserted the Kiwis. John Wright, who faced nine balls, scored a couple. He was caught by Syed Kirmani. Roger Binny broke the opening stand, which was worth a dozen.

Crowe scored 76. His 83-ball (Mart)innings included eight boundaries. He was caught by Mohinder Amarnath, who broke the 130-run partnership. John Reid scored 11. His 13-ball innings included a boundary. Ravi Shastri broke the 29-run stand.

Richard Hadlee scored 22. His 16-ball innings included a boundary and a couple of sixes. He was caught by Amarnath. Yadav broke the fourth-wicket partnership, which was worth 25.

Edgar, who faced 118 balls, scored 75. His innings included three boundaries. Dev broke the 13-run stand.

Jeremy Coney, the New Zealand skipper, scored 11. His run-a-ball innings included a boundary. He was caught by Mohammad Azharuddin. Yadav broke the 16-run stand.

Blair scored 29. His 34-run innings included a couple of boundaries and a six. He was unbeaten. McSweeney wasn’t in seventh heaven, because he scored just half-a-dozen. Sharma broke the 15-run stand.

Gillespie, who faced 13 balls, scored seven. Sharma broke the eighth-wicket stand, which was worth 16. The ninth-wicket pair put on just a couple. Boock, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. He was run out.

Ewen Chatfield, who faced a ball, scored a run. He was unbeaten. India conceded 19 extras. New Zealand scored 259 for the loss of nine wickets off 50 overs.

Binny bowled six overs, including a maiden. He conceded 29, picking up a wicket. Shastri, who bowled nine overs, conceded 53. He picked up a wicket.

Sunil Gavaskar faced 17 balls, scoring 27. His innings included four boundaries and a six. Chatfield broke the 40-run stand. The second-wicket partnership was worth 97. Krishnamachari Srikkanth scored 50. His 69-ball innings included seven boundaries. He was run out.

The third-wicket pair put on 17. Mohammad Azharuddin, who faced a dozen balls, scored 13. His innings included a couple of boundaries. He was run out. Amarnath scored 61. His 73-ball innings included nine boundaries and a six. Boock broke the eight-run partnership.

Dilip Vengsarkar, who faced 29 balls, scored nine. He was caught by Coney. Gillespie broke the fifth-wicket stand, which was worth 14. Dev scored 54. His 53-ball innings included five boundaries. He was unbeaten, as was Shastri, who faced 41 balls, scoring 36.
