India, Devorld champs, are WInless

India made just one change to their playing eleven – Chetan Sharma made way for Rajinder Singh Ghai. The West Indies made four changes to the eleven that played India in the previous meeting of the two teams, which was in 1983 – Gordon Greenidge, Eldine Baptiste, Milton Pydanna and Wayne Daniel made way for Gus Logie, Jeff Dujon, Joel Garner and Courtney Walsh.

It was a 45-overs-a-side match. Kapil Dev, India’s skipper, chose to bat on winning the toss. Sunil Gavaskar scored 76. His 128-ball innings included four boundaries and three sixes. He was unbeaten. Krishnamachari Srikkanth scored half-a-dozen. His 18-ball innings included a boundary. Garner broke the 10-run stand.

Mohinder Amarnath wasn’t in seventh heaven, because he didn’t open his account. He was caught by Vivian Richards, the West Indian captain. Garner broke the second-wicket partnership, which was worth just one.

Dilip Vengsarkar, who faced 33 balls, scored six. He was caught by Garner. Michael Holding broke the 14-run stand. The fourth-wicket partnership was worth 100. Mohammad Azharuddin scored 35. His 72-ball innings included a couple of boundaries. He was run out. Dev scored 28. His 25-ball innings included a couple of boundaries. He was unbeaten.

The West Indies conceded 29 extras. India scored 180 for the loss of four wickets off 45 overs. Each of the five bowlers used bowled nine overs apiece. Roger Harper, who was wicketless, conceded 52. Walsh, whose wicketless spell included a maiden, conceded 37.

Malcolm Marshall, whose wicketless spell included a couple of maidens, conceded 35. Holding, who bowled three maidens, conceded 28. He picked up a wicket. Garner's spell included four maidens. He conceded 11, picking up a couple of scalps.

Desmond Haynes scored 72. His 105-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries. He was unbeaten. Richie Richardson, the player of the match, scored 72. His 103-ball innings included seven boundaries. Ghai broke the 114-run stand.

Larry Gomes, who faced 28 balls, scored 10. Dev broke the 31-run stand. Richards, who faced 13 balls, scored 24. His innings included a couple of boundaries and as many sixes. He was unbeaten.

India conceded eight extras. The Caribbean islanders scored 186 for the loss of a couple of wickets off 41.3 overs, WInning by eight wickets with 21 balls to spare. Roger Binny, who bowled seven wicketless overs, conceded 36.

Laxman Sivaramakrishnan and Ravi Shastri bowled nine wicketless overs apiece. While the former conceded 32, the latter, whose spell included a maiden, conceded 27. Dev bowled eight overs, including a maiden. He conceded 29. He picked up a wicket, as did Ghai, who bowled 8.3 overs, conceding 54.
