India are Devictors over Australia

While India’s playing eleven was unchanged, Australia made five changes to the eleven that lost to them in Melbourne – Robbie Kerr, Wayne Phillips, Geoff Lawson, Rodney Hogg and Terry Alderman were replaced by Kim Hughes, Greg Matthews, Steve Rixon, Murray Bennett and Craig McDermott.

Kapil Dev, India’s skipper, won the toss and inserted the Aussies, whose openers put on 60. Graeme Wood, whose 37-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 27. He was run out. Dean Jones, who faced 10 balls, scored eight. All his runs came by way of boundaries. He was caught by Viswanath. Madan Lal broke the 11-run S(t)a(dana)nd.

Kepler Wessels, who faced 68 balls, scored 30. His innings included a couple of boundaries. He was caught by Sunil Gavaskar. Needless to say, Lal was in seventh heaven. Hughes, who faced 24 balls, scored 11. He was caught by Mohinder Amarnath, who broke the fourth-wicket partnership, which was worth 36.

Allan Border, the Aussie skipper, scored 27. His 38-ball innings included three boundaries. He was caught by Amarnath, who broke the one-run stand. The sixth-wicket pair put on 16. Simon O’Donnell, who faced 25 balls, scored three. He was run out.

Matthews, who faced 31 balls, scored 11. He was trapped leg before wicket by Dev, who broke the seven-up stand. The eighth-wicket pair put on just a run. Rixon, who faced 14 balls, scored four. He was run out.

The ninth-wicket pair didn’t open its account. Bennett, who faced two balls, didn’t get off the mark. He was trapped leg before wicket by Ravi Shastri. The tenth-wicket pair also failed to get off the mark. McCurdy, who faced five balls, didn’t open his account. He was caught by Dilip Vengsarkar off the bowling of Shastri.

McDermott, who didn’t face a ball, was unbeaten. India conceded 18 extras. Australia were dismissed for 139 off 42.3 overs. Roger Binny, who bowled five overs, conceded 25. He was wicketless, as was Laxman Sivaramakrishnan, who bowled eight overs, including a maiden. He conceded 29.

Dev bowled half-a-dozen overs. Of these, half were maidens. He conceded nine and picked up a wicket. Lal and Amarnath bowled seven overs each, picking up a couple of scalps apiece. While the former conceded 30, the latter, whose spell included a maiden, conceded 19. Shastri bowled 9.3 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 14 and picked up a couple of scalps.

Krishnamachari Srikkanth, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. He was trapped leg before wicket by McDermott, who broke the opening stand, which was worth a couple. Shastri scored nine. His 26-ball innings included a boundary. He was caught by Rixon. O'Donnell broke the 35-run partnership.

Mohammad Azharuddin scored 22. His 44-ball innings included three boundaries. He was caught by Jones. McDermott broke the four-run stand. 

The fourth-wicket partnership was worth 57. Gavaskar, the player of the series, faced 50 balls, scoring 20. His innings included a couple of boundaries. He was run out. Vengsarkar scored 35. His 43-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries. McDermott broke the five-run partnership.

Amarnath, the player of the match, scored 24. His 44-ball innings included three boundaries. He was unbeaten. Dev, who faced 14 balls, scored just a run. Matthews broke the 14-run stand.

Binny, who faced five balls, scored a couple. Matthews broke the three-run stand. Lal, whose 14-ball innings included a boundary, was in seventh heaven, because he was unbeaten.

Australia conceded 20 extras. India scored 140 for the loss of seven wickets off 39.2 overs, winning by three wickets with 64 balls to spare.

Border bowled eight wicketless balls, conceding six. McCurdy bowled four overs, including a maiden. He conceded 10. He was wicketless, as was Bennett, who bowled 10 overs, conceding 35.

O'Donnell bowled four overs, including a maiden. He conceded 11 and picked up a wicket. Matthews bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 33 and picked up two wickets. McDermott bowled 10 overs, including three maidens. He conceded 36 and picked up three scalps.

The Indians won the Rothmans Four Nations Cup.
