Ind(ia)eed, Sri Lanka (Gavask)are dishear'ten'ed

In a bid to regain the form that had 'desert'ed them in the second half of 1983, India made six changes to the eleven that played their first match in the emirate.

Besides Randhir Singh, the quintet that wasn’t picked comprised Krishnamachari Srikkanth, Ashok Malhotra, Mohinder Amarnath, Syed Kirmani and Raju Kulkarni.

Sunil Gavaskar returned as skipper, and the match marked Manoj Prabhakar’s One-day International debut.

The others who made a comeback were Surinder Khanna, Sandeep Patil, Kirti Azad and Madan Lal.

Sri Lanka made four changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Bandula Warnapura, Ashantha de Mel, Mahes Goonatilleke and Rumesh Ratnayeke made way for Brendon Kuruppu, Arjuna Ranatunga, Aravinda de Silva and Uvais Karnain.

Gavaskar, who won the toss, inserted the Sri Lankans. Kuruppu, who faced one ball, didn’t get off the mark. He was caught by Khanna. Chetan Sharma broke the one-run stand.

Roy Dias, who faced 27 balls, scored five. He was caught by Vengsarkar. Prabhakar broke the 16-run stand.

Duleep Mendis, Sri Lanka’s skipper, faced five balls, scoring just a run. He was caught by Patil. Sharma bowled the three-run stand.

Wettimuny, who faced (Sida)thirty-two balls, scored a dozen. He was caught by Lal. Prabhakar broke the six-run stand.

The fifth-wicket pair put on 27. Ranatunga scored nine. His 20-ball innings included a boundary. He was run out.

Aravinda scored 11. His 27-ball innings included a boundary. He was trapped leg before wicket by Lal, who broke the 24-run stand.

Karnain wasn’t in seventh heaven, because he didn’t get off the mark. Lal trapped him leg before wicket, breaking the two-run stand.

Ranjan Madugalle scored 38. His 76-ball innings included five boundaries. Lal broke the one-run stand.

Ravi Ratnayake wasn’t in seventh heaven, because he scored just a couple. His namesake, Ravi Shastri, broke the four-run stand.

Somachandra de Silva, who faced 28 balls, scored eight. He was unbeaten. Vinothen John, who faced 14 balls, scored two. He was caught by Gavaskar. Sharma broke the 10-run stand.

India conceded eight extras. Sri Lanka were bundled out for 96 off 41 overs. Azad, who bowled an over, conceded a run. He was wicketless, as was Roger Binny, who bowled seven overs. He conceded 25.

Shastri bowled seven overs, including a maiden. He conceded 13 and picked up a wicket. Prabhakar bowled 10 overs, including three maidens. He conceded 16 and picked up a couple of wickets.

Sharma and Lal bowled eight overs apiece, picking up three scalps each. While the former, whose spell included a maiden, conceded 22, the latter, whose spell included a couple of maidens, conceded 11.

Khanna, who bagged the player of the match and player of the series awards, scored 51. His 69-ball innings included six boundaries. He was unbeaten, as Ghulam Parkar, who scored 32. His 68-ball innings included three boundaries.

Sri Lanka conceded 14 extras. India scored 97 for no loss off 21.4 overs, winning by 10 wickets with 170 balls to spare. Madugalle bowled four wicketless balls, conceding just a run. Karnain, who bowled a couple of wicketless overs, conceded four.

Ratnayake bowled four wicketless overs, conceding 27. Somachandra, who bowled six wicketless overs, conceded 21. John bowled nine wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 30.
