India'S(uni)loss to England is narrow

While England played an unchanged eleven, India made a couple of changes – Sandeep Patil and Chetan Sharma made way for Mohinder Amarnath and Ashok Patel. On winning the toss, David Gower, England’s skipper, inserted the hosts, whose openers – Krishnamachari Srikkanth and Ravi Shastri – put on 188. The former, whose 111-ball innings included four boundaries and three sixes, scored 99. He was trapped leg before wicket by Mike Gatting.

Dilip Vengsarkar, who faced 27 balls, scored 23. His innings included three boundaries. He was caught by Gower. Vic Marks broke the second-wicket partnership, which was worth 47. Shastri, the player of the match, scored 102. His 142-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries and (R)aVI. Gatting broke the eight-run stand.

The fourth-wicket pair failed to open its account. Yashpal Sharma, who scored four off as many balls, was trapped leg before wicket by Marks. Amarnath, who faced five balls, scored a run. He was unbeaten. Roger Binny, who faced three balls, scored a couple. Marks broke the three-run stand. Sunil Gavaskar, India's skipper, faced four balls, scoring six. He was unbeaten.

England conceded 15 extras. India scored 252 for the loss of six wickets off 49 overs. Neil Foster bowled five overs, conceding 26. He was wicketless, as was Richard Ellison, who bowled six overs, conceding 31.

Phil Edmonds and Norman Cowans bowled 10 wicketless overs apiece. While the former conceded 47, the latter conceded 39. Gatting, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 49. He picked up a couple of wickets. Marks, who bowled eight overs, conceded 50. He picked up three scalps.

England’s target was revised to 241 off 46 overs, owing to bad light. Tim Robinson, who faced three balls, scoring a run. Manoj Prabhakar broke the three-run stand. Graeme Fowler, who faced 23 balls, scored 15. He was caught by Shastri. Binny broke the 47-run stand. Gower scored 21. His 30-ball innings included a couple of boundaries. He was caught by Prabhakar. Binny broke the 43-run stand.

Gatting scored 59. His 86-ball innings included four boundaries. Patel broke the 35-run partnership. The fifth-wicket pair put on 17. Allan Lamb scored 28. His 36-ball innings included a couple of boundaries. He was run out. The sixth-wicket partnership was worth 58. Marks scored 44. His 40-ball innings included four boundaries. He was run out.

Paul Downton scored 44. His 41-ball innings included three boundaries. He was unbeaten, as was Ellison, who faced a dozen balls, scoring 14. India conceded 15 extras. England scored 241 for the loss of six wickets off 46 overs, winning by just a run. Amarnath bowled a wicketless over, conceding nine.

Ghai bowled eight overs, conceding 40. He was wicketless, as was Shastri, who bowled 10 overs, conceding 48. Patel and Prabhakar bowled 10 overs apiece, picking up a wicket each. While the former conceded 53, the latter (whose spell included a maiden), conceded 34. Binny, who bowled seven overs, conceded 48. He picked up a couple of scalps.

England led the five-match series 2-0.
