India are lacK(api)lustre, remain WInless

India made three changes to their playing eleven – Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar and Yashpal Sharma made way for Anshuman Gaekwad, Ravi Shastri and Ashok Malhotra. The West Indies made one too – Michael Holding made Way(ne) for Daniel.

Dev, India’s Kap(il)tain, chose to bat on winning the toss. Gaekwad wasn’t in seventh heaven, because he failed to open his account at his home ground. He was caught by Jeff Dujon. Daniel broke the seven-run stand.

Krishnamachari Srikkanth, who faced 45 balls, scored 19. Roger Harper broke the 40-run stand. Sandeep Patil, who faced 49 balls, scored 31. He was caught by Larry Gomes. Eldine Baptiste broke the third-wicket partnership, which was worth 69.

Shastri scored 65. His 125-ball innings included five boundaries. He was caught by Vivian Richards. Gomes broke the 41-run stand. Malhotra, who faced 27 balls, scored 29. He was caught by Desmond Haynes. Gomes broke the 10-run stand.

Gomes, who faced 58 balls, scored 26. Dev trapped him leg before wicket, breaking the 24-run stand. Clive Lloyd, the West Indies’ skipper, scored 31. His 17-ball innings included four boundaries and a six. He was caught by Balvinder Singh Sandhu. Dev broke the 23-run stand.

Dujon, who faced 15 balls, scored 17. He was unbeaten. Marshall, who faced five balls, scored three. Lal broke the sixth-wicket stand, which was worth nine. Eldine Baptiste faced three balls, scoring four. He was unbeaten.

India conceded 19 extras. The West Indies scored 217 for the loss of six wickets off 47.5 overs. Binny, who bowled a couple of overs, conceded 16. He was wicketless, as was Sandhu, who bowled eight overs, conceding 53.
