Under Sehwag’SLeadership, India win comfortably

India made four changes to their playing eleven – Rahul Dravid, Venugopal Rao, Suresh Raina and Ajit Agarkar made way for Sachin Tendulkar, Mohammad Kaif, Irfan Pathan and Harbhajan Singh. Sri Lanka made just one Chan(dana)ge to their playing eleven – Muttiah Muralitharan made way for Upul.

On winning the toss, Virender Sehwag, India’s skipper, inserted the visitors. Sanath Jayasuriya, whose 17-ball innings included four boundaries, scoreD(ho)nineteen. Forty-six balls later, he was caught by Mahendra Singh. Sreesanth broke the 44-run stand.

Sri Lanka scored 50 off 9.1 overs. While their second Powerplay was between the 11th and the 15th over, their third was between the 16th and 20th over.

Kumar Sangakkara, whose 13-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored nine. Nineteen balls later, he was caught by Tendulkar. Pathan broke the 12-run stand. Upul Tharanga, whose 42-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 28. Seven balls later, he was caught by Dhoni. R P Singh, the player of the match, broke the one-run stand.

Jayawardene, whose run-a-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 14. Twenty-five balls (Mahe)later, he was stumped by Dhoni. Murali Kartik broke the 12-run stand.

Marvan Atapattu, Sri Lanka’s skipper, scored nine. His 18-ball innings included a couple of boundaries. Ten balls later, he was caught by Sehwag. R P broke the four-run stand.

Sri Lanka scored 100 off 19.5 overs. India had conceded an extra at that point. The sixth-wicket pair put on 35. Russel Arnold, who faced 20 balls, scored eight. Fifty balls later, Kaif and Dhoni ran him out. Chaminda Vaas, whose 20-ball innings included a boundary, scored nine. Twenty-seven balls later, Kartik broke the 14-run stand.

Sri Lanka scored 150 off 33.5 overs. India had conceded a couple of extras at that point. The eighth-wicket pair put on 29. Tillakaratne Dilshan, whose 63-ball innings included nine boundaries, scored 59. His 50 – which included eight boundaries – came off 53 balls. Thirty-three balls later, Yuvraj Singh ran him out.

At the beginning of the 37th over, Nuwan Zoysa made way for Farveez Maharoof and Kartik made way for Suresh Raina under the SuperSub rule.

Maharoof, who faced 10 balls, scored four. Twenty-six balls later, he was caught by Kaif. R P broke the 21-run stand. Chandana, whose 32-ball innings included five boundaries, scored 30. Fourteen balls later, R P broke the run-a-ball stand. Dilhara, who faced nine balls, scored F(ernand)our. He was unbeaten.

India conceded three extras. Sri Lanka were dismissed for 196 off 42.5 overs. Harbhajan bowled nine wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 38. Pathan, who bowled seven overs, conceded 38. He picked up a wicket, as did Sreesanth, who bowled eight overs, conceding 50.

Kartik bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 42, picking up two wickets. R P bowled 8.5 overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 35, picking up four scalps.

Gautam Gambhir, whose 27-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries, scored 28. Forty-six balls into the chase, Fernando broke the 43-run stand.

India scored 50 off nine overs. Sri Lanka had conceded four extras at that point. Tendulkar, whose 30-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 19. A (Fernan)dozen balls after Gambhir’s dismissal, he was caught by Maharoof. The paceman broke the 14-run stand.

While India’s second Powerplay was between the 11th and the 15th over, their third was between the 16th and 20th over.

Sehwag, whose run-a-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 22. Forty-three balls later, he was caught by Dilshan. Chandana broke the 35-run stand.

India scored 100 off 18.5 overs. Sri Lanka had conceded seven extras at that point. The fourth-wicket pair (Kaif and Yuvraj) put on 50 off 68 balls. While the former was batting on nine at that point, the latter was batting on 36. Sri Lanka had conceded five extras at that point.

India scored 150 off 28.5 overs. Sri Lanka had conceded seven extras at that point. Yuvraj’s half-century – which included half-a-dozen boundaries and a couple of sixes – came off 48 balls.

Kaif and Yuvraj put on 100 off 109 balls. While the former was batting on 17 at that point, the latter was batting on 75. Sri Lanka had conceded eight extras at that point. Kaif, whose 71-ball innings included three boundaries, eventually scored 38. He was unbeaten, as was Yuvraj, who scored 79. His 67-ball innings included nine boundaries and three sixes.

Sri Lanka eventually conceded 11 extras. India, who scored 197 for the loss of three wickets off 34.5 overs, won by seven wickets with 15.1 overs to spare. Jayasuriya, who bowled 3.5 wicketless overs, conceded 22. Maharoof, who bowled four wicketless overs, conceded 24. Dilshan, who bowled five wicketless overs, conceded 23.

Vaas, who bowled seven wicketless overs, conceded 38. Chandana, who bowled five wicketless overs, conceded 32. He picked up a wicket. Fernando bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 58, picking up two scalps.
