Dravid-led India’s Summit Losses continue

India made just one change to their playing eleven – V V S Laxman made way for Harbhajan Singh. Sri Lanka made three Ch(amind)anges to the eleven that last played the Indians – Upul Tharanga, Pradeep Jayaprakashdaran and Dilhara Fernando made way for Sanath Jayasuriya, Vaas and Muttiah Muralitharan.

On winning the toss, Marvan Atapattu, Sri Lanka’s skipper, chose to bat. He scored 11. His 22-ball innings included a boundary. Half-a-dozen overs into the match, Ashish Nehra broke the 32-run stand.

Dilhara, whose seven-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored nine. Eleven balls later, he was trapped L(okuhettig)eg before wicket by Nehra, who broke the 14-run stand. Kumar Sangakkara, whose 12-ball innings included a boundary, scored eight. Thirty-two balls later, he was caught by Virender Sehwag. Nehra broke the 21-run stand.

The fourth-wicket pair put on 55. Jayasuriya, whose 77-ball innings included nine boundaries, scored 67. He became the fourth batsman to achieve the 10,000-run milestone. Seventy-six balls later, Harbhajan Singh and Mahendra Singh Dhoni ran him out.

Jayawardene, the player of the match and the player of the series, scored 83. His 97-ball innings included five boundaries. A hundred and seventeen balls later, he was caught by Mohammad Kaif. Nehra broke the 125-run partnership.

The sixth-wicket pair put on 10. Russel Arnold, whose 63-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 64. Eight balls later, Rahul Dravid, India’s skipper, ran him out. Tillakaratne Dilshan, who faced 11 balls, had no reason to be in seventh heaven – eight balls later, Nehra broke the five-run stand.

Vaas, whose nine-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 18. He was unbeaten. Upul Chandana, who faced four balls, scored a couple. Eight balls later, he was caught by Harbhajan. Nehra broke the six-run stand.

The ninth-wicket pair put on 13. Muralitharan didn’t face a ball. Four balls later, Sehwag and Nehra ran him out. India conceded a dozen extras. Sri Lanka scored 281 for the loss of nine wickets off 50 overs. Sehwag, who bowled a couple of wicketless overs, conceded 14.

Anil Kumble and Harbhajan bowled 10 wicketless overs apiece. While the former conceded 64, the latter conceded 40. Irfan Pathan and Zaheer Khan bowled nine wicketless overs apiece. While the former conceded 59, the latter, whose spell included a maiden, conceded 43. Nehra bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 59, picking up six scalps.

Sehwag, whose 22-ball innings included nine boundaries and a six, scored 48. Thirty-eight balls into the chase, Vaas broke the 62-run partnership. Sourav Ganguly, whose 45-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 26. Fifty-seven balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Dilshan, who broke the 40-run stand.

Yuvraj Singh, whose 58-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 42. A hundred and sixteen balls later, he was caught by Lokuhettige. Chandana broke the 84-run partnership.

The fourth-wicket pair put on 19. Rahul Dravid, whose 99-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 69. Twenty-two balls later, Dilshan and the wicketkeeper (Sangakka)ran him out.

The man from Ranchi, who faced 11 balls, had no reason to be in seventh heaven – (Dho)nineteen balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Chandana, who broke the 11-run stand. Pathan, who faced four balls, scored a run. Half-a-dozen balls later, Muralitharan broke the three-run stand.

The seventh-wicket pair put on four. Harbhajan, who faced a ball, didn’t get off the mark. Seven balls later, Farveez Maharoof and the gloveman (Sangakka)ran him out. Khan, whose three-ball innings included a boundary, scored five. Four balls later, he was caught by the substitute, Upul Tharanga. Muralitharan broke the six-run stand.

Kaif, whose 36-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 31. Sixteen balls later, he was caught by Atapattu. Vaas broke the 17-run stand. Kumble, who faced 15 balls, scored nine. He was unbeaten, as was Nehra, who scored nine. His seven-ball innings included a boundary.

Sri Lanka conceded 16 extras. India, who scored 263 for the loss of nine wickets off 50 overs, lost by 18 runs. Jayasuriya, who bowled a wicketless ball, conceded a run. Arnold, who bowled a couple of wicketless overs, conceded a dozen.

Lokuhettige, who bowled five wicketless overs, conceded 41. Maharoof, who faced half-a-dozen wicketless overs, conceded 48. Dilshan, who faced seven overs, conceded 42. He picked up a wicket.

Chandana, who bowled 9.5 overs, conceded 38. He picked up a couple of wickets. Vaas and Muralitharan bowled 10 overs each, picking up a couple of scalps apiece. While the former, whose spell included a maiden, conceded 38, the latter conceded 35.

The Sri Lankans won the 2005 Indian Oil Cup.
