South Africa leave India D(rav)i(sheartene)d

While India made no changes to their playing twelve, South Africa made a couple of changes to the twelve that last played the Indians – A B de Villiers and Ntini M(akhay)ade way for Charl Langeveldt and Albie Morkel.

On winning the toss, Graeme Smith, South Africa’s skipper – and the player of the match – inserted the hosts. Irfan Pathan, who faced a couple of balls, didn’t get off the mark. Three balls into the match, he was caught by Smith. Shaun Pollock broke the two-run stand.

Sachin Tendulkar, who faced 15 balls, scored just a couple. Twenty-four balls later, he was caught by Mark Boucher. Pollock broke the 12-run stand. Gautam Gambhir, whose 19-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 11. Fourteen balls later, he was caught by Smith. Pollock broke the nine-run stand.

Virender Sehwag, whose 21-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries, scored 30. Twenty-seven balls later, he was caught by Boucher. Andrew Hall broke the 26-run stand. Rahul Dravid, India’s skipper, scored half-a-dozen. His 31-ball innings included a boundary. Forty-two balls La(ngeveld)ter, the pacer, who was also a prison warder, broke the 22-run stand.

Yuvraj Singh, whose 78-ball innings included seven boundaries, scored 53. A hundred and three B(oth)alls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Johan, who broke the 81-run partnership.

Mohammad Kaif, whose 63-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 46. Twenty-three balls later, he was caught by Smith. Andre Nel broke the 15-run stand. Ajit Agarkar, whose 16-ball innings included a boundary, scored 11. Thirty-two balls later, Jacques Kallis broke the 20-run stand.

The (Dho)ninth-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Mahendra Singh, who faced 26 balls, scored 14. Four dot balls later, he was caught by Botha off the bowling of Hall. Harbhajan Singh, who faced four balls, didn’t get off the mark. Three balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Hall, who broke the one-run stand. R P Singh, who faced a ball, scored a run. He was unbeaten.

South Africa conceded 14 extras. India were dismissed for 188 off 45.5 overs. Morkel, who bowled a couple of wicketless overs, conceded 13. Kallis, who bowled four overs, conceded 20. He picked up a wicket. Botha, who bowled five overs, conceded 21. He picked up a wicket.

Langeveldt bowled eight overs, including a maiden. He conceded 33, picking up a wicket. Nel bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 35, picking up a wicket. Hall, who bowled 6.5 overs, conceded 36. He picked up three scalps, as did Pollock, who bowled 10 overs, including four maidens. He conceded 25.

At the beginning of the chase, Nel was replaced by Robin Peterson under the SuperSub rule. Smith, whose 124-ball innings included 20 boundaries and a six, scored 134. He was unbeaten, as was Hall, who scored 48. His 94-ball innings included four boundaries.

Eleven overs into the chase, Gambhir made way for Murali Kartik under the SuperSub rule. India conceded seven extras. South Africa, who scored 189 without the loss of a wicket off 35.5 overs, won by 10 wickets with 14.1 overs to spare.

Sehwag, who bowled 2.5 overs, conceded 13. R P, who bowled four overs, conceded 18. Agarkar, who bowled five overs, conceded 41. Pathan, who bowled half-a-dozen overs, conceded 28. Kartik bowled eight overs, including a maiden. He conceded 52. Harbhajan, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 37.

The South Africans led the five-match series 2-1.
