changes to their playing eleven – Yuvraj Singh, Venugopal Rao and Zaheer Khan
made way for Sourav Ganguly, V V S Laxman and Lakshmipathy Balaji.
Sri Lanka made a couple of changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Sanath Jayasuriya and Muttiah Muralitharan made way for Upul Tharanga and One-day International debutant Pradeep Jayaprakshdaran.
On winning the toss, Rahul Dravid, India’s skipper, chose to bat. Virender Sehwag, whose 39-ball innings included five boundaries, scored 32. Ninety-one balls later, Jayaprakashdaran broke the 67-run partnership. It was the medium-pacer’s only appearance at the international level.
Laxman, whose 43-ball innings included a boundary, scored 22. Eighty-eight balls later, Tillakaratne Dilshan broke the 50-run partnership.
Ganguly, whose 110-ball innings included five boundaries, scored 51. During his innings, he became the third batsman – and the second Indian (after Sachin Tendulkar) – to score 10,000 runs in One-day Internationals*. Nineteen balls later, Upul Chandana broke the 10-run stand.
