Dravid-led India WIn, enter final

India made three changes to their playing eleven – Suresh Raina, Harbhajan Singh and Lakshmipathy Balaji made way for Yuvraj Singh, Anil Kumble and Zaheer Khan. The West Indies made a couple of changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Jermaine Lawson made way for Omari Banks and Deighton Butler.

On winning the toss, Rahul Dravid, India’s skipper, chose to bat. Sourav Ganguly, who faced a dozen balls, scored a couple. Twenty-two balls into the match, he retired hurt, having been hit on the arm by a rising ball. The Indians had scored half-a-dozen without loss at that point.

V V S Laxman, whose 12-ball (Ramd)innings included a boundary, had no reason to be in seventh heaven – forty-three balls later, he was caught by Denesh. Daren Powell broke the 21-run stand.

The second-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Virender Sehwag, who faced 23 balls, scored half-a-dozen. Eight balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Butler. Dravid, whose 26-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 10. Forty-six balls later, Banks broke the 30-run stand.

Yuvraj Singh, the player of the match, scored 110. His 114-ball innings included 11 boundaries and a six. A hundred and seventy-eight balls later, he was caught by Tino Best. Narsingh Deonarine broke the 165-run partnership.

Mohammad Kaif, whose 103-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries, scored 83. He was unbeaten, as was Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who scored 28. His 13-ball innings included a boundary and a couple of sixes.

The West Indies conceded 16 boundaries. India scored 262 for the loss of four wickets off 50 overs. Best, who bowled seven overs, conceded 40. He was wicketless, as was Dwayne Smith, who bowled 10 overs, conceding 43.

Powell bowled seven overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 35, picking up a wicket. Deonarine, who bowled eight overs, conceded 69. He picked up a wicket, as did Butler, who bowled eight overs, including a maiden. He conceded 30. Banks, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 41. He picked up a wicket.

Xavier Marshall, whose 23-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 19. Thirty-eight balls into the chase, he was trapped leg before wicket by trapped leg before wicket by Irfan Pathan, who broke the 37-run stand.

Sylvester Joseph, who was leading the West Indies, faced a dozen balls, scoring four. His runs came by way of a boundary. Fifteen balls later, he was caught by the substitute, Harbhajan Singh. Needless to say, Pathan was in seventh heaven.

Deonarine, whose 12-ball innings included a boundary, scored half-a-dozen. Twenty-five balls later, he was caught by Kumble. Ashish Nehra broke the 15-run stand. Banks, whose nine-ball innings included a boundary, scored half-a-dozen. Three overs later, the (Kumb)leggie broke the 11-run stand.

Smith, whose 12-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and as many sixes, scored 26. Twenty-two balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by the (Kumb)leggie, who broke the 28-run stand.

Ricardo Powell, who faced 15 balls, scored four. Twenty-three balls later, he was caught by the substitute, Venugopal Rao. Kumble broke the 14-run stand. Runako Morton, whose 104-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries and a six, scored 84. Ninety-three balls later, he was caught by Dravid. Nehra broke the 83-run partnership.

Ramdin, whose 83-ball innings included seven boundaries, scored 74. He was unbeaten. Best, who faced a dozen balls, scored three. Twenty-six balls later, Sehwag broke the 13-run stand.

The ninth-wicket pair put on 32. Butler, whose 12-ball innings included a boundary, scored nine. Twenty-six balls later, Kaif ran him out. Although he was unbeaten, Daren, who scored five, had no reason to be in seventh heaven.

India conceded 15 extras. The West Indies, who scored 255 for the loss of nine wickets off 50 overs, lost by nine wickets. Yuvraj, who bowled three overs, conceded 22. He was wicketless, as was Zaheer Khan, who bowled 10 overs, conceding 51.

Sehwag, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 43. He picked up a wicket. Nehra, who bowled nine overs, conceding 60. He picked up a couple of wickets, as did Pathan, who bowled eight overs, including a maiden. He conceded 34. Kumble, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 38. He picked up three scalps.

India advanced.
