India made three Ch(et)anges to their playing eleven – Woorkeri Raman, Pravin Amre and Javagal Srinath made way for Sanjay Manjrekar, Sharma and Venkatapathy Raju. South Africa made just one to theirs – Brian McMillan made for Meyrick Pringle. Mohammad Azharuddin, India’s skipper, won the toss, inserting the hosts.

Andrew Hudson, whose 29-ball innings included a boundary, scored 15. Sixty-five balls into the match, he was caught by Vijay Yadav. Kapil Dev, the player of the match, broke the 28-run stand. Peter Kirsten, whose 69-ball innings included a couple of sixes, scored 44. Twenty-three overs later, he was caught by Manjrekar. Ravi Shastri broke the 93-run stand.

Kepler Wessels, South Africa’s skipper, scored 78. His 120-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries. Thirty-seven balls later, he was caught by Manjrekar. Manoj broke the 36-run P(rabhak)artnership. Jonty Rhodes, whose 25-ball innings included a six, scored 16. Ten balls later, he was caught by Shastri. Dev broke the five-run stand.

Dave Callaghan, whose 12-ball innings included a boundary, scored eight. Eleven balls later, he was stumped by Yadav. Anil Kumble broke the run-a-ball stand. The sixth-wicket pair put on 25. David Richardson, who faced 11 balls, scored a dozen. Five overs later, Yadav ran him out.

Hansie Cronje, whose 29-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 25. Eight balls later, Dev broke the 17-run stand. The eighth-wicket pair put on just a run. Pringle, who faced eight balls, scored nine. The last ball of the innings, Dev ran him out. Craig Matthews, who faced a ball, scored a run. He was unbeaten.

India conceded eight extras. South Africa scored 216 for the loss of eight wickets off 50 overs. Sharma, who bowled four wicketless overs, conceded 18. Raju bowled 10 wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 45.

Shastri, who bowled half-a-dozen overs, conceded 36. He picked up a wicket. Prabhakar and Kumble bowled 10 overs, including a maiden, each, picking up a scalp apiece. While the former conceded 54, the latter conceded 33. Dev bowled 10 overs, including four maidens. He conceded 23, picking up three scalps.

Prabhakar, who faced 48 balls, scored 21. Ninety-five balls into the chase, he was caught by Richardson. Matthews broke the 40-run stand. Ajay Jadeja, whose 45-ball innings included a boundary, scored a dozen. Four balls later, he was caught by Richardson. Pringle broke the second-wicket stand, which was worth just a couple.

The third-wicket pair put on 23. Manjrekar, who scored 27 balls, scored 10. Thirty-nine balls later, Hudson ran him out. Sachin Tendulkar, who faced 39 balls, scored 23. Eighty-three balls later, he was caught by Cronje. Pringle broke the 45-run stand.

Azharuddin, whose 73-ball innings included three boundaries and the only six of the innings, scored 41. Twenty-three balls later, he was caught by Fanie de Villiers. Cronje broke the 17-run stand. The Mumbai all-rounder, who faced S(hastr)ix balls, scored five. Fifteen balls later, he was caught by Kirsten. Pringle broke the 17-run stand.

Yadav, who faced three balls, scored as many. Matthews was in seventh heaven, because he broke the nine-run stand. Dev, whose 37-ball innings included five boundaries, scored 30. Thirteen balls later, he was caught by Richardson. Allan Donald broke the 19-run stand.

The ninth-wicket pair put on just a run. Kumble, who faced a ball, failed to get off the mark. A couple of balls later, Richardson and Donald ran him out. Sharma, who faced 16 balls, scored 15. Half-a-dozen balls later, he was caught by Rhodes. De Villiers broke the four-run stand. Raju, who faced four balls, scored three. He was unbeaten.

South Africa conceded 14 extras. India, who were dismissed for 177 off 47.5 overs, lost by 39 runs. Callaghan, who bowled four wicketless overs, conceded 21. Cronje bowled six overs, including a maiden. He conceded 20, picking up a wicket.

De Villiers bowled 8.5 overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 22, picking up a wicket. Donald bowled nine overs, including three maidens. He conceded 18, picking up a wicket. Matthews, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 40. He picked up a couple of wickets. Pringle, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 51. He picked up three scalps.
