The IndianSA(zha)re triumphant and advance

India made a couple of Cha(uha)nges to their playing eleven – Woorkeri Raman and Rajesh made way for Ajay Jadeja and Salil Ankola. South Africa made a couple of changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Peter Kirsten and Craig Matthews made way for Pat Symcox and Richard Snell.

On winning the toss, Kepler Wessels, the South African skipper, inserted the hosts. Manoj, who faced eight balls, scored a run. He was trapped leg before wicket by Fanie de Villiers, who broke the six-run P(rabhak)artnership. The second-wicket pair put on 88. Jadeja, whose 62-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries, scored 39. He was run out.

Sachin Tendulkar, who faced 25 balls, scored three. He was caught by David Richardson. Hansie Cronje broke the 35-run stand. Vinod Kambli, the player of the match, scored 86. His 116-ball innings included 10 boundaries. Cronje broke the 51-run stand.

Pravin Amre, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored a couple. He was caught by Allan Donald. Cronje broke the eight-run stand. The sixth-wicket pair put on four. Mohammad Azharuddin, India’s skipper, scored 31. His 50-ball innings included three boundaries. Jonty Rhodes ran him out.

Vijay Yadav, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored a couple. Snell broke the four-run stand. The eighth-wicket pair put on three. Anil Kumble faced a couple of balls, scoring as many. De Villiers ran him out. Javagal Srinath, who faced four balls, scored a run. He was caught by Andrew Hudson. Snell broke the 12-run stand.

Kapil Dev, whose 17-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 22. He was caught by Wessels. De Villiers broke the 10-run stand. Ankola, who faced three balls, scored a couple. He was unbeaten.

South Africa conceded 30 extras. India were dismissed for 221 off 49.2 overs. Symcox, who bowled three overs, conceded 16. He was wicketless, as was Donald, who bowled eight overs, conceding 39.

Brian McMillan, who bowled 10 wicketless overs, conceded 45. De Villiers, who bowled 8.2 overs, conceded 27. He picked up a couple of wickets, as did Snell, who bowled 10 overs, conceding 54. Cronje, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 29. He picked up three scalps.

Wessels, who faced nine balls, scored a run. He was caught by Yadav. Srinath was in seventh heaven. Hudson, whose 47-ball innings included five boundaries, scored 27. Dev trapped him leg before wicket, breaking the 33-run stand.

Cronje, whose 70-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 39. Jadeja broke the 68-run stand. Dave Callaghan, who faced 22 balls, scored half-a-dozen. He was caught by Dev. Jadeja broke the 16-run stand.

McMillan, who faced seven balls, scored a couple. He was trapped leg before wicket by Kumble, who broke the three-run stand. Rhodes, whose 72-ball innings included a boundary, scored 56. He was trapped leg before by Ankola, who broke the 17-run stand.

Richardson, who faced 36 balls, scored 23. He was unbeaten. Symcox, who faced seven balls, scored a couple. Prabhakar broke the three-run stand. Snell, who faced three balls, scored a couple. He was caught by Kumble. Ankola broke the three-run stand.

De Villiers, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored just a run. He was caught by Yadav. Ankola was in seventh heaven. Donald, who faced 24 balls, scored five. He was unbeaten.

India conceded 14 extras. South Africa, who scored 178 for the loss of nine wickets off 50 overs, lost by 43 runs. Srinath bowled seven overs, including a maiden. He conceded 22, picking up a wicket. Dev bowled eight overs, including a maiden. He conceded 32, picking up a wicket.

Prabhakar and Kumble bowled 10 overs each, picking up a wicket apiece. While the former conceded 36, the latter conceded 35. Jadeja bowled five overs, including a maiden. He conceded 16, picking up a couple of wickets. Ankola bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 33, picking up three scalps.

Both the Indians and the South Africans advanced.
