Both the teams made no change to their playing elevens. Kepler Wessels, South Africa’s skipper, inserted the visitors. Woorkeri Raman, who faced 16 balls, didn’t get off the mark. Thirty-five balls into the match, Allan Donald broke the nine-run stand.

Pravin Amre, who faced nine balls, scored a couple. He was trapped leg before wicket by Donald, who broke the run-a-ball stand, which lasted just three balls. Ajay Jadeja, whose 60-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 18. He was trapped leg before wicket by Dave Callaghan, who broke the 49-run stand, which lasted 87 balls.

Tendulkar, whose 44-ball (Sach)innings included a boundary, scored 21. Fourteen balls later, he was caught by Brian McMillan. Donald broke the 46-run stand. The eighth-wicket pair put on half-a-dozen. Kiran More, who faced nine balls, scored a couple. A couple of overs later, Rhodes ran him out. Ravi Shastri, who faced 32 balls, scored 17. Four dot balls later, he was caught by McMillan off the bowling of Fanie de Villiers. Manoj Prabhakar, who faced 11 balls, scored five. He was unbeaten, as was Anil Kumble, who scored seven. South Africa scored 19 extras. India scored 161 for the loss of nine wickets off 50 wickets. Hansie Cronje, who bowled five wicketless overs, conceding 15. Callaghan, who bowled five overs, conceded 17. He picked up a wicket.

McMillan and de Villiers bowled 10 overs each, picking up a wicket apiece. While the former conceded 39, the latter, whose spell included a couple of maidens, conceded 24. Andrew Hudson, whose 56-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 22. He was caught by Azharuddin. Kumble broke the 47-run stand, which lasted 111 balls. Wessels, whose 96-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 45. Eighty-three balls later, he was caught by Jadeja. Srinath broke the 41-run stand.

Peter Kirsten, whose 48-ball innings included a boundary, scored 21. A couple of overs later, Srinath was in seventh heaven, because he trapped him leg before wicket. Rhodes, whose 56-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and the only six of the match, scored 42. He was unbeaten.

The fourth-wicket pair put on 38. Callaghan, who faced 27 balls, scored a dozen. Sixty-two balls later, Jadeja ran him out. Cronje, whose eight-ball innings included a boundary, scored 11. He was unbeaten.

India conceded 12 extras. South Africa, who scored 165 for the loss of four wickets off 48.3 overs, won by six wickets with nine balls to spare. Tendulkar, who bowled three wicketless overs, conceded four. Prabhakar bowled eight wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 24.

Dev bowled nine wicketless overs, conceding 23. Shastri bowled 10 wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 33. Kumble bowled nine overs, including a maiden. He conceded 33, picking up a wicket. The Karnataka pacer bowled 9.3 overs, including a maiden. He conceded (Srina)thirty-nine, picking up a couple of scalps.

South Africa led the seven-match series 3-1.
