India begin calE(ngla)ndar yeA(zha)r poorly

It was a 48-0vers-a-side match. India made (Srina)three Ch(et)anges to their playing eleven – Sanjay Manjrekar, Sharma and Subroto Banerjee made way for Navjot Singh Sidhu, Vinod Kambli and Javagal.

England made three changes to the eleven that last played the Indians (at the World Cup the previous year) – Ian Botham, Derek Pringle and Phil Tufnell made way for Mike Gatting, John Emburey and Paul Jarvis. Graham Gooch, their skipper, won the toss, inserting the hosts.

India’s opening pair didn’t get off the mark. Sidhu, who faced a couple of balls, didn’t open his account. He was dismissed by Jarvis. Manoj, whose 29-ball included four boundaries, scored 25. Jarvis broke the 31-run P(rabhak)artnership.

It was Kambli’s 21st birthday, and he celebrated it by scoring 100. His 149-ball innings, which earned him the player of the match award, included nine boundaries and a six. He was unbeaten. Mohammad Azharuddin, India’s skipper, faced 28 balls, scoring half-a-dozen. He was trapped leg before wicket by Chris Lewis, who broke the 28-run stand.

Tendulkar, whose 81-ball (Sach)innings included half-a-dozen boundaries and a six, scored 82. He was unbeaten. England conceded 10 extras. India scored 223 for the loss of three wickets off 48 overs.

Gooch, who bowled a couple of wicketless overs, conceded 13. Emburey, who bowled eight wicketless overs, conceded 49. Phil DeFreitas bowled nine wicketless overs, including three maidens. He conceded 40.

Dermot Reeve bowled 10 wicketless overs, conceding 37. Lewis bowled nine overs, conceding 26. He picked up a wicket. Jarvis bowled 10 overs, conceding 49. He picked up a couple of scalps.

Gooch, who faced 25 balls, scored just four. He was trapped leg before wicket by Kapil Dev, who broke the 29-run stand. Robin, who faced (Smi)thirty-nine balls, scored 16. He was caught by Prabhakar, who broke the 56-run stand.

Alec Stewart, whose 126-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries and a couple of sixes, scored 91. He was caught by Vijay Yadav. Dev broke the 60-run stand. Gatting, whose 39-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 30. Anil Kumble broke the 16-run stand.

Neil Fairbrother, whose 38-ball innings included five boundaries and a six, scored 46. He was unbeaten. The fifth-wicket pair put on 39. Graeme Hick, whose 14-ball innings included a boundary, scored 13. He was run out.

Reeve, who faced three balls, scored a couple. Prabhakar broke the three-run stand. Lewis, who scored eight, was in seventh heaven, because he was unbeaten. India conceded 14 extras. England, who scored 224 for the loss of six wickets off 48 overs, won by four wickets.

Venkatapathy Raju bowled eight wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 35. Srinath bowled 10 wicketless overs, conceding 47. The (Kumb)leggie bowled 10 overs, conceding 54. He picked up a wicket.

Prabhakar and Dev bowled 10 overs each, picking up a couple of scalps apiece. While the former conceded 43, the latter, whose spell included a maiden, conceded 36.

England led the six-match series (following the cancellation of the first match) 1-0.
