India made a couple of changes to their playing eleven – Pravin Amre and Salil Ankola made way for Ajay Sharma and Maninder Singh. England made one change to theirs – Mike Gatting made way for Alec Stewart. Mohammad Azharuddin, the former’s skipper, won the toss, inserting the latter.

Stewart, whose 68-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 33. Anil Kumble broke the 101-run stand. Graeme Hick, whose 25-ball innings included a boundary, scored 18. He was caught by Kiran More. Manoj broke the 53-run P(rabhak)artnership.

Neil Fairbrother, whose 39-ball innings included three boundaries and a six, scored 37. He was caught by Singh. Javagal Srinath broke the 73-run stand. Smith, whose 145-ball (Rob)innings included a dozen boundaries and four sixes, scored 129. He was trapped leg before wicket by Srinath, who broke the 19-run stand.

The fifth-wicket pair failed to get off the mark. Chris Lewis, who faced nine balls, scored four. He was trapped leg before wicket by Prabhakar. The sixth-wicket pair put on five. Graham Gooch, England’s skipper, faced three balls, scoring a run. Ankola, the substitute, and Azharuddin ran him out.

Azharuddin, whose 72-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries and the only six of the innings, scored 74. He was caught by Stewart. Malcolm broke the 175-run stand.

Tendulkar, whose six-ball (Sach)innings included a boundary, scored five. Jarvis broke the 10-run stand. The sixth-wicket pair put on just a run. Sharma, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. He was run out.

Dev, who faced nine balls, scored a couple. He was caught by Hick. Jarvis broke the 12-run stand. More, who faced three balls, scored just a run. He was caught by Hick. Malcolm broke the three-run stand. Kumble, who faced 33 balls, scored 19. He was unbeaten.

England conceded 20 extras. India, who scored 257 for the loss of seven wickets off 48 overs, won by three wickets with a couple of overs to spare. Hick, who bowled a couple of wicketless overs, conceded 18. Reeve, who bowled half-a-dozen wicketless overs, conceded 37.

Lewis, who bowled 10 wicketless overs, conceded 56. DeFreitas, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 52. He picked up a wicket. Jarvis, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 43. He picked up a couple of wickets. Malcolm, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 40. He picked up three scalps.

England led the six-match series 3-2.
