India made three
changes to their playing eleven – Woorkeri Raman, Ajay Sharma and Salil Ankola
made way for Manoj Prabhakar, Pravin Amre and One-day International debutant
Rajesh Chauhan.
Sri Lanka made one
change to the eleven that last played the Indians – Kapila Wijegunawardene made
way for Ashley de Silva. Arjuna Ranatunga, their skipper, won the toss,
inserting the hosts.
Navjot Singh
Sidhu, whose 69-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 39. Ruwan
Kalpage broke the 77-run stand. Vinod Kambli, who faced 22 balls, scored nine.
Kalpage broke the 15-run stand.
Prabhakar, whose
77-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 39. He was caught by
Asanka Gurusinha, who broke the five-run stand. Tendulkar, whose (Sana)thirty-nine-ball
(Sach)innings included a boundary, scored 21. He was caught by Gurusinha. Jayasuriya
broke the 42-run stand.
Although Amre’s
five-ball innings included a boundary, he wasn’t in seventh heaven. Kalpage
broke the nine-run stand. Dev, whose 31-ball innings included a Kapil of
boundaries and a six, scored 27. He was caught by Hashan Tillakaratne. Pramodya
Wickramasinghe broke the 52-run stand.
Mohammad
Azharuddin, India’s skipper and the player of the match, scored 53. His 57-ball
innings included a couple of boundaries and a six. He was caught by Chandika
Hathurusingha. Champaka Ramanayake broke the 10-run stand.
Vijay Yadav, whose
five-ball innings included a boundary, scored half-a-dozen. He was caught by
Kalpage. Ramanayake broke the eighth-wicket stand, which was worth just a
couple. Anil Kumble, who faced a ball, didn’t get off the mark. He was
unbeaten.
Sri Lanka conceded
11 extras. India scored 212 for the loss of eight wickets off 50 overs.
Hathurusingha bowled four wicketless overs, conceding 24. Gurusinha bowled
seven overs, conceding 21. He picked up a wicket, as did Wickramasinghe, who
bowled nine overs, conceding 41.
Jayasuriya bowled
10 overs, conceding 33. He picked up a wicket. Ramanayake bowled 10 overs,
conceding 50. He picked up a couple of wickets. Kalpage bowled 10 overs, conceding
42. He picked up three scalps.
Roshan Mahanama,
whose 49-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 24. He was stumped by
Yadav. Kumble broke the 46-run stand. The second-wicket pair didn’t get off the
mark. Gurusinha, who faced a ball, did not open his account. He was caught by
Dev off the bowling of Kumble.
Aravinda de Silva,
whose 79-ball innings included a boundary and a couple of sixes, scored 62. He
was caught by Amre. Javagal Srinath broke the 115-run stand. Ranatunga, who
faced 11 balls, scored a couple. He was trapped leg before wicket by Chauhan,
who broke the 11-run stand.
Hathurusingha,
whose 121-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 64. He was
trapped leg before wicket by Chauhan, who broke the one-run stand.
Tillakaratne, who faced nine balls, scored five. He was caught by Kambli.
Prabhakar broke the 13-run stand.
Jayasuriya, whose
run-a-ball innings included a boundary, scored 17. He was caught by Amre. Dev
broke the 10-run stand. Kalpage, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored nine. He
was unbeaten.
The eighth-wicket
pair put on 11. Ashley, who never represented Sri Lanka again, faced
half-a-dozen balls, scoring four. He was run out. Ramanayake, who faced a ball,
didn’t get off the mark. Srinath broke the one-run stand. Wickramasinghe, who
faced a ball, didn’t open his account. Prabhakar broke the three-run stand.
India conceded 24
extras. Sri Lanka, who were dismissed for 211 off 49.2 overs, lost by a run.
Dev bowled 10 overs, including three maidens. He conceded 29, picking up a
wicket. Prabhakar bowled 9.2 overs, conceding 50. He picked up two wickets.
Srinath, Chauhan
and Kumble bowled 10 overs each, picking up a couple of scalps apiece. The (Kumb)leggie’s
spell included a couple of maidens. They conceded 64, 41 and 22, respectively.
The Indians led
the three-match series 1-0.
