India give visitors (Azh)arude (Zimbab)welcome

It was a 48-0vers-a-side match. India made four changes to the eleven that levelled the series against England – Kapil Dev, Ajay Sharma, Kiran More and Maninder Singh made way for Pravin Amre, Vijay Yadav, Salil Ankola and Venkatapathy Raju.

Zimbabwe made three changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Andy Waller, Craig Evans and Mark Burmester made way for Mark Dekker, Wayne James and Eddo Brandes. (Hought)On winning the toss, Dave, their skipper, inserted the hosts.

Manoj, whose 80-ball innings included five boundaries, scored 56. He was caught by Houghton. John Traicos broke the 114-run P(rabhak)artnership. Navjot Singh Sidhu, whose 83-ball (Bra)innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 56. He was caught by David. Gary Crocker broke the 35-run stand.

Mohammad Azharuddin, India’s skipper, faced 13 balls, scoring eight. He was caught by Grant Flower, who broke the 34-run stand. Sachin Tendulkar, who faced nine balls, scored three. He was caught by Grant, who broke the 21-run stand.

Amre, who faced five balls, scored just a couple. He was caught by James. Brandes broke the three-run stand. Vinod Kambli, the player of the match, scored 80. His 75-ball innings included eight boundaries and the only six of the innings. Brain broke the 38-run stand.

Yadav, whose 23-ball innings included a boundary, scored 19. He was unbeaten. The seventh-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Anil Kumble, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. He was caught by James off the bowling of Brain. Ankola, who faced a couple of balls, scored a run. He was unbeaten.

Zimbabwe conceded 24 extras. India conceded 249 for the loss of seven wickets off 48 overs. Ali Shah, who bowled four wicketless overs, conceded 26. Traicos, Crocker and Brandes bowled 10 overs each, picking up a wicket apiece. They conceded 61, 54 and 32, respectively. Grant, who bowled five overs, conceded 25. He picked up a couple of scalps, as did Brain, who bowled nine overs, conceding 36.

Andy Flower, whose 21-ball innings included a boundary, scored nine. Prabhakar broke the 20-run stand. Alastair Campbell, who faced 52 balls, scored a dozen. He was caught by Prabhakar. Raju broke the 51-run stand.

Grant, whose 67-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 42. He was caught by Kumble. Raju broke the 14-run stand. The fourth-wicket pair put on 20. Houghton, whose 29-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 23. He was run out.

The fifth-wicket pair put on 10. James, who faced a couple of balls, failed to get off the mark. He was run out. Shah, who faced eight balls, scored a couple. He was caught by Raju. Kumble broke the 11-run stand.

Brandes, whose five-ball innings included a boundary, wasn’t in seventh heaven. He was trapped leg before by Javagal Srinath, who broke the nine-run stand. Crocker, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored just a couple. He was caught by Yadav. Srinath broke the six-run stand.

Mark Dekker, whose 49-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 22. He was caught by Azharuddin. Srinath broke the six-run stand. Brain, whose 20-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and as many sixes, scored 27. He was stumped by Yadav. Tendulkar broke the 35-run stand. Traicos, who faced 22 balls, scored seven. He was unbeaten.

India conceded 29 extras. Zimbabwe, who were dismissed for 182 off 46.2 overs, lost by 67 runs. Ankola bowled seven wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 20. Tendulkar, who bowled a couple of balls, conceded half-a-dozen. He picked up a wicket.

Prabhakar bowled nine overs, including a maiden. He conceded 33, picking up a wicket. Kumble, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 37. He picked up a wicket. Raju bowled 10 overs, conceding 26. He picked up a couple of scalps. The Karnataka pacer bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded (Srina)thirty-eight, picking up three scalps.

India led the three-match series 1-0.
