The Indians certainly (Azh)aren’t (En)gla(n)d

It was a 26-overs-a-side match. India made one change to their playing eleven – Venkatapathy Raju made way for Salil Ankola. England made one to theirs as well – Alec Stewart made way for Richard Blakey. Graham Gooch, England’s skipper, won the toss, inserting the hosts.

Manoj, who faced seven balls, scored just a couple. He was caught by Blakey. Phil DeFreitas broke the 11-run P(rabhak)artnership. Navjot Singh Sidhu, whose 28-ball innings included a boundary, scored 18. He was caught by DeFreitas. Devon Malcolm broke the 35-run stand.

The third-wicket pair put on five. Vinod Kambli, whose 37-ball innings included a boundary, scored 23. Malcolm ran him out. Mohammad Azharuddin, India’s skipper, scored 23. His 22-ball innings included a boundary. He was caught by Neil Fairbrother, the player of the match. Chris Lewis broke the 45-run stand.

Tendulkar, whose 32-ball (Sach)innings included a boundary, scored 24. Paul Jarvis broke the three-run stand. Kapil Dev, whose 13-ball innings included a boundary, scored 15. He was unbeaten.

Amre, whose 13-ball (Prav)innings included three boundaries, scored 19. He was caught by Gooch. Jarvis broke the 23-run stand. The seventh-wicket pair put on five. Ankola, who faced three balls, scored a couple. Fairbrother and Blakey ran him out. Kiran More, who faced a couple of balls, scored just a run. He was unbeaten.

England conceded 10 extras. India scored 137 for the loss of seven wickets off 26 overs. Dermot Reeve, who bowled half-a-dozen wicketless overs, conceded 32. DeFreitas, who bowled four overs, conceded 17. He picked up a wicket.

Lewis, who bowled five overs, conceded 25. He picked up a wicket, as did Malcolm, who bowled half-a-dozen overs, conceding 17. Jarvis, who bowled five overs, conceded 40. He picked up a couple of wickets.

Gooch, whose 19-ball innings included a boundary, scored 15. He was caught by More. Dev broke the 27-run stand. Graeme Hick, who faced eight balls, scored a run. He was caught by Azharuddin. Ankola broke the second-wicket stand, which was worth half-a-dozen.

The third-wicket pair put on 10. Smith, whose 27-ball (Rob)innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 17. Ankola and More ran him out. Fairbrother, whose 52-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 53. He was unbeaten. He was hit on the knee by Ankola, and used Smith as a runner.

Lewis, whose 30-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 25. He was trapped leg before wicket by Manoj Prabhakar, who broke the 50-run stand. Reeve, whose 20-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 17. He was unbeaten.

India conceded 13 extras. England, who scored 141 for the loss of four wickets off 25.4 overs, won by six wickets with a couple of balls to spare. Anil Kumble, who bowled four wicketless overs, conceded 23. Dev bowled four overs, including a maiden. He conceded 10, picking up a wicket.

Prabhakar, who bowled 5.4 overs, conceded 34. He picked up a wicket. Javagal, who bowled half-a-dozen wicketless overs, conceded (Srina)thirty-eight. Ankola, who bowled half-a-dozen overs, conceded 28. He picked up a scalp.

England led the six-match series 3-1.
