It was a 47-overs-a-side match. India made a change to their playing eleven – Vijay Yadav made way for Kiran More. England made a change to theirs as well – Ian Salisbury made way for Devon Malcolm. Mohammad Azharuddin, India’s skipper, won the toss, inserting the visitors.

Alec Stewart, whose 32-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 14. He was trapped leg before wicket by Javagal Srinath, who broke the 42-run stand. Smith, whose 50-ball (Rob)innings included four boundaries, scored 29. He was caught by More. Srinath broke the 23-run stand.
