Kohli leads; India beat SL

India (Shar)made four changes to their playing eleven – Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami made way for Wriddhiman Saha, Ravichandran Ashwin, Varun Aaron and Ishant.

Sri Lanka made seven changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Kusal Perera, Lahiru Thirimanne, Dinesh Chandimal, Sachithra Senanayake, Chaturanga de Silva, Ajantha Mendis and Lasith Malinga made way for Upul Tharanga, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Seekkuge Prasanna, Ashan Priyanjan, Suraj Randiv, Dhammika Prasad and One-day International debutant Lahiru Gamage.

On winning the toss, Angelo Mathews, Sri Lanka’s skipper, inserted the hosts.

The first Powerplay of India’s innings – which was the mandatory Powerplay – was between the first and the 10th over. They scored 43, without the loss of a wicket.

India’s openers put on 50 off 11 overs (66 balls). Sri Lanka had conceded five extras at that point. While the contribution of Ajinkya Rahane, the player of the match, to the partnership was 21, Shikhar Dhawan’s contribution to it was 24.

Fifteen overs into the match, the first drinks break was taken. While Rahane was batting on 35, Dhawan was batting on 28.

Rahane’s half-century – which included five boundaries and a six – came off 61 balls.

India scored 100 off 20.4 overs (124 balls). The number of extras they had conceded at that point gave Sri Lanka no reason to be in seventh heaven. While Rahane’s contribution to the partnership was 50, Dhawan’s contribution to it was 44.

Dhawan’s half-century – which included seven boundaries and a six – came off 64 balls.

The second Powerplay of India’s innings – which was the batting Powerplay – was between the 24th and the 28th over. They scored 62, without the loss of a wicket.

India scored 150 off 25.4 overs (155 balls). Sri Lanka had conceded eight extras at that point. While Rahane’s contribution to the partnership was 68, Dhawan’s contribution to it was 74.

Thirty overs into the match, the second drinks break was taken. While Rahane was batting on 97, Dhawan was batting on 89.

India scored 200 off 31.2 overs (189 balls). Sri Lanka had conceded nine extras at that point. While Rahane’s contribution to the partnership was 99, Dhawan’s contribution to it was 92.

While Rahane’s ton – which included a dozen boundaries and a couple of sixes – came off 99 balls, Dhawan’s ton – which included a dozen boundaries and three sixes – came off 96 balls.

Dhawan, whose 107-ball innings included 14 boundaries, in addition to the aforementioned number of sixes, eventually scored 113. Thirty-five balls into the match, Priyanjan broke the 231-run partnership.

Rahane, whose 108-ball innings included 13 boundaries and a couple of sixes, scored 111. Seventeen balls (Mahe)later, he was caught by Jayawardene. Randiv broke the 16-run stand.

India scored 250 off 38.4 overs (233 balls). Sri Lanka had conceded nine extras at that point.

The third-wicket pair put on 50 off 33 balls. While Suresh Raina’s contribution to the partnership was 38, the contribution of Virat Kohli, India’s skipper, to it was a dozen. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was a couple.

Raina’s half-century – which included four boundaries and three sixes – came off 33 balls. He eventually scored 52 off 34 balls. Thirty-four balls after Rahane’s dismissal, he was trapped leg before wicket by Randiv, who broke the 52-run partnership.

India scored 300 off 43.5 overs (264 balls). Sri Lanka had conceded 11 extras at that point.

Kohli, whose 21-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, eventually scored 22. Fifteen balls after Raina’s dismissal, he was caught by Thisara Perera. Randiv broke the run-a-ball stand.

Ambati Rayudu, whose 20-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 27. Seventeen balls later, he was caught by Perera. Gamage broke the 30-run stand.

Saha, whose eight-ball innings included a boundary, was unbea‘ten’. Axar Patel, whose four-ball innings included a couple of sixes, scored 14. He was unbeaten.

Sri Lanka eventually conceded 14 extras. India scored 363 for the loss of five wickets off 50 overs.

Dilshan, who bowled three wicketless overs, conceded 19. Mathews, who bowled four wicketless overs, conceded 33. Prasanna, who bowled half-a-dozen wicketless overs, conceded 47. Perera, who bowled seven wicketless overs, conceded 51. Prasad, who bowled nine wicketless overs, conceded 60.

Priyanjan, who bowled a couple of overs, conceded 11. He picked up a wicket, as did Gamage, who bowled nine overs, including a maiden. He conceded 59. Randiv, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 78. He picked up three scalps.

Kumar Sangakkara, whose run-a-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 13. Twenty-seven balls after Dilshan’s dismissal, he was caught by Saha. Ishant broke the 30-run stand.

Tharanga, whose 53-ball innings included three boundaries, eventually scored 28. Eighteen balls after Sangakkara’s dismissal, he was caught by Dhawan. Ravichandran Ashwin broke the 23-run stand.

Sri Lanka scored 100 off 18.4 overs (112 balls). India had conceded eight extras at that point.

Prasanna, who faced 13 balls, scored just five. Twenty-nine balls after Tharanga’s dismissal, he was caught by Rahane. Patel broke the 25-run stand.

Jayawardene, whose 36-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries and a six, scored 43. Twenty-four balls later, he was caught by Kohli. Patel broke the 21-run stand.

Mathews, whose 32-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 23. Thirty balls later, he was caught by Patel. Raina broke the 14-run stand.

Sri Lanka scored 150 off 30.3 overs (183 balls). India had conceded 14 extras at that point.

Priyanjan, whose 21-ball innings included a boundary, scored just a dozen. Nineteen balls after Mathews’ dismissal, he was caught by Saha. Sharma broke the 23-run stand.

It was at that point that the second drinks break was taken. Sri Lanka had scored 167 for the loss of seven wickets at that point. Perera was batting on 11.

The second Powerplay of Sri Lanka’s innings – which was the batting Powerplay – was between the 36th and the 40th over. They scored 19, for the loss of three wickets.

Randiv, whose eight-ball innings included a boundary, scored five. A dozen balls later, Sharma broke the eight-run stand.

The ninth-wicket pair didn’t get off the (Shar)mark. Prasad, who faced four balls, didn’t open his account. Four balls later, he was caught by Saha off the bowling of the Delhi pacer.

Perera, whose 27-ball innings included four boundaries, eventually scored 29. Twenty balls later, he was caught by Sharma. Yadav broke the 19-run stand.

Gamage, who faced eight balls, didn’t get off the mark. He was unbeaten.

India eventually conceded 18 extras. Sri Lanka, who were dismissed for 194 off 39.2 overs, lost by 169 runs. Kohli bowled five balls, scoring half-a-dozen. He was wicketless, as was Aaron, who bowled 4.1 overs, conceding 26.

Raina bowled five overs, conceding 24. He picked up a wicket, as did Ashwin, who bowled nine overs, conceding 52.

Patel bowled half-a-dozen overs, conceded 24. He picked up two wickets, as did Yadav, who bowled 6.2 overs, including two maidens. He also conceded 24. Sharma bowled eight overs, including a maiden. He conceded 34, picking up four scalps.

India led the five-match series 1-0.
