India win comfortably; England D(hon)isappointed

India (Shar)made eight changes to their playing (Pat)eleven – Robin Uthappa, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ambati Rayudu, Manoj Tiwary, Wriddhiman Saha, Stuart Binny, Axar and Umesh Yadav made way for Rohit, Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, Mahendra Singh Dhoni (India’s skipper), Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami.

England made four changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Jonathan Trott, Ravi Bopara, Tim Bresnan and Stuart Binny made way for One-day International debutant Alex Hales, Ben Stokes and the Chrises (Woakes and Jordan).

On winning the toss, Alastair Cook, England’s skipper, inserted the visitors.

The first Powerplay of India’s innings – which was the mandatory Powerplay – was between the first and the 10th over. They scored 26, and lost a couple of wickets.

Dhawan, whose 22-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 11. Forty-three balls into the match, he was caught by Jos Buttler. Woakes broke the 19-run stand.

The second-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Kohli, who faced three balls, didn’t open his account. Three balls later, he was caught by Cook off the bowling of Woakes.

India scored 50 off 13.2 overs (80 balls). England had conceded half-a-dozen extras at that point.

The third-wicket pair put on 50 off 47 balls. While Rohit Sharma’s contribution to the partnership was 23, Ajinkya Rahane’s contribution to it was 21. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was half-a-dozen.

Sixteen overs into the match, the first drinks break was taken. India had scored 71 for the loss of a couple of wickets at that point. While Rohit’s contribution to the partnership was 29, Rahane’s contribution to it was 21.

India scored 100 off 21.2 overs (129 balls). England had conceded 11 extras at that point.

Rahane, whose 47-ball innings included four boundaries, eventually scored 41. Ninety-seven balls after Kohli’s dismissal, he was stumped by Buttler. James Tredwell broke the 91-run partnership.

Rohit’s half-century – which included four boundaries and a six – came off 82 balls. He eventually scored 52 off 87 balls. Thirty-three balls later, he was caught by Woakes. Tredwell broke the 22-run stand.

Thirty-two overs into the match, the second drinks break was taken. India had scored 140 for the loss of four wickets at that point. While the contribution of Suresh Raina, the player of the match, to the partnership was 20, Dhoni’s contribution to it was a run.

India scored 150 off 34.1 overs (206 balls). England had conceded 15 extras at that point.

The second Powerplay of India’s innings – which was the mandatory Powerplay – was between the 36th and the 40th over. They scored 62, without the loss of a wicket.

Raina’s half-century – which included half-a-dozen boundaries and a six – came off 49 balls.

The fifth-wicket pair put on 50 off as many balls. While Raina’s contribution to the partnership was 41, the contribution of the man from Ranchi to it was (Dho)nine. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was three.

India scored 200 off 38.4 overs (233 balls). England had conceded 18 extras at that point.

The fifth-wicket pair put on 100 off 71 balls. While Raina’s contribution to the partnership was 68, Dhoni’s contribution to it was 25. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was three.

India scored 250 off 43.1 overs (260 balls). England had conceded 22 extras at that point.

Raina’s ton – which included a dozen boundaries and three sixes – came off 74 balls. He eventually scored 75 balls, failing to add to the aforementioned score. A hundred and one balls after Rohit’s dismissal, he was caught by James Anderson. Woakes broke the 144-run partnership.

Dhoni’s half-century – which included half-a-dozen boundaries – came off 49 balls. He eventually faced 51 balls, scoring 52. Fourteen balls later, Woakes broke the 12-run stand.

India scored 300 off 49.4 overs (299 balls). England had conceded 28 extras at that point.

Jadeja, who faced 11 balls, scored nine. He was unbeaten. Ashwin, whose five-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, was unbea‘ten’.

England eventually scored 29 extras. India scored 304 for the loss of half-a-dozen wickets off 50 overs.

Joe Root, who bowled three wicketless overs, conceded 14. Stokes, who bowled seven wicketless overs, conceded 54. Jordan and Anderson (whose spell including a maiden) bowled 10 wicketless overs apiece. While the former conceded 73, the latter conceded 57.

Tredwell bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 42, picking up a couple of scalps. Woakes bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 54, picking up four scalps.

Rain delayed the start of the chase. As a result, England’s target was revised to 295 off 47 overs.

Ian Bell, who faced a couple of balls, scored a run. Three balls later, he was caught by Ashwin. Shami broke the two-run stand.

Root, who faced four balls, scored as many. His runs came by way of a boundary. Sixteen balls later, Kumar had a reason to be in seventh heaven.

Sixteen overs into the match, the first drinks break was taken. India had scored 67 for the loss of three wickets at that point. While Hales’ contribution to the partnership was 37, Eoin Morgan’s contribution to it was a couple.

Hales, whose 63-ball innings included five boundaries, eventually scored 40. Forty-two balls after Root’s dismissal, he was caught by Ashwin. Jadeja broke the 18-run stand.

Buttler, who faced nine balls, scored just a couple. A dozen balls later, he was caught by Kohli. Jadeja broke the four-run stand.

England scored 100 off 26.3 overs (159 balls). India had conceded four extras at that point.

Morgan, whose 45-ball innings included three boundaries, eventually scored 28. Forty-three balls after Buttler’s dismissal, he was caught by Shami. Ashwin broke the 34-run stand.

Stokes, whose 29-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 23. Seventeen balls later, he was caught by Rahane. Needless to say, Jadeja was in seventh heaven.

Jordan, whose 23-ball innings included a six, scored 20. He was trapped leg be‘four’ wicket by Raina, who broke the two-run stand.

England scored 150 off 36.3 overs (219 balls). India had conceded five extras at that point. That was, incidentally, the number of extras they eventually conceded.

Tredwell, whose 11-ball innings included a six, scored 10. Sixteen balls after Woakes’ dismissal, he was caught by Jadeja. Ashwin broke the 18-run stand.

Anderson, whose eight-ball innings included a boundary, scored nine. He was unbeaten.

England, who were dismissed for 161 off 38.1 overs, lost by 133 runs under the Duckworth-Lewis method. Mohit bowled half-a-dozen wicketless overs, including a (Shar)maiden. He conceded 18.

Raina bowled three overs, conceded 12. He picked up a wicket, as was Kumar, who bowled seven overs, conceding 30.

Shami bowled half-a-dozen overs, conceding 32. He picked up two wickets, as did Ashwin, who bowled 9.1 overs, conceding 38.

Jadeja bowled seven overs, conceding 28. He picked up four scalps.
