Sehwag leads; SA beat India

It was India's last One-day International for 2006. They (Moham)made three changes to their playing eleven – Wasim Jaffer, Kaif and Ajit Agarkar made way for V V S Laxman, Dinesh Mongia and Harbhajan Singh. South Africa made a couple of changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Loots Bosman and Andrew Hall made way for Ashwell Prince and Robin Peterson.

On winning the toss, Graeme Smith, South Africa’s skipper, inserted the Indians. Virender Sehwag, India’s skipper, scored 11. His 22-ball innings included a couple of boundaries. Forty-one balls into the match, he was caught by Mark Boucher. Shaun Pollock – the player of the match and the player of the series – broke the 18-run stand.

The second-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Laxman, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. The next ball, he was caught by Smith off the bowling of Pollock.

Seventeen overS(ach)into the match, the first drinks break was taken. India had scored 34 for the loss of a couple of wickets at that point. While Tendulkar was batting on 11, Mongia was batting on six. India scored 50 off 19.4 overs. South Africa had conceded seven extras at that point.

The third-wicket pair had put on 50 off 103 balls. While Tendulkar’s contribution to the partnership was 35, Mongia’s contribution to it was 16. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was a couple.

Tendulkar’s half-century – which included eight boundaries – came off 86 balls. India scored 100 off 30 overs. South Africa had conceded 10 extras at that point. Tendulkar, whose 97-ball (Just)innings included eight boundaries, scored 55. A hundred and forty-eight balls later, he was caught by AB de Villiers. Kemp broke the 85-run partnership.

A hundred and ninety balls into the match, the second drinks break was taken. India had scored 103 for the loss of three wickets at that point. Mongia was batting on 27. Mongia, whose 89-ball innings included three boundaries, eventually scored 41. Thirty-eight balls later, Kemp broke the 24-run stand.

India scored 150 off 42.2 overs. South Africa had conceded a dozen extras at that point. Dinesh Karthik, whose 15-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored (N)eleven. Twenty-eight balls after Mongia’s dismissal, he was caught by Mark Boucher. Andre broke the 27-run stand.

Irfan Pathan, who faced nine balls, had no reason to be in seventh heaven – 20 balls later, Jacques Kallis broke the 19-run stand. Harbhajan Singh, who faced five balls, scored a run. (Nti)Nine balls later, he was caught by Pollock. Makhaya broke the 10-run stand.

The eighth-wicket pair D(hon)idn’t get off the mark. Mahendra Singh, whose 49-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and as many sixes, scored 44. A couple of balls later, he was caught by Nel off the bowling of Ntini. Zaheer Khan, whose 10-ball innings included a boundary and a six, scored 16. He was unbeaten.

India scored 200 off 49.4 overs. South Africa had conceded 13 extras at that point. Anil Kumble, who faced three balls, scored a run. Thirteen balls after Dhoni’s dismissal, Ntini broke the 17-run stand.

South Africa eventually conceded 13 extras. India scored 200 for the loss of nine wickets off 50 overs. Peterson, who bowled five wicketless overs, conceded 33. Kallis and Nel bowled 10 overs, including a maiden, each, picking up a wicket apiece. While the former conceded 56, the latter conceded 34.

Kemp, who bowled five overs, conceded 23. He picked up a couple of wickets, as did Pollock, who bowled 10 overs, including four maidens. He conceded 17. Ntini bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 32, picking up three scalps.

The chase was preceded by the lunch interval. South Africa scored 50 off 7.4 overs. India had conceded five extras at that point. While Smith’s contribution to the partnership was 21, de Villiers’ contribution to it was 26.

De Villiers’ half-century – which included nine boundaries – came off 50 balls. Sixteen overs into the chase, South Africa had scored 95 without the loss of a wicket. While Smith was batting on 34, de Villiers was batting on 51.

South Africa scored 100 off 17 overs. India had conceded 10 extras at that point. While Smith’s contribution to the partnership was 33, de Villiers’ contribution to it was 55. Smith’s half-century – which included half-a-dozen boundaries and a six – came off 61 balls.

South Africa scored 150 off 25.2 overs. India had conceded a dozen extras at that point. Both Smith and de Villiers’ contribution to the partnership were 69. Smith, whose 85-ball innings included seven boundaries and three sixes, scored 79. A hundred and sixty-nine balls into the chase, he was caught by Karthik. Harbhajan broke the 173-run partnership.

De Villiers, whose 98-ball innings included a dozen boundaries and a six, scored 92. He was unbeaten, as was Pollock, who scored 16. His 10-ball innings included three boundaries. South Africa scored 200 off 31.2 overs. India had conceded 14 extras at that point.

India eventually conceded 14 extras. South Africa, who scored 201 for the loss of a wicket off 31.2 overs, won by nine wickets with 112 balls to spare. Sreesanth, who bowled 3.2 wicketless overs, conceded 31. Pathan, who bowled half-a-dozen wicketless overs, conceded 48.

Khan and Kumble bowled seven wicketless overs. While the former, whose spell included a maiden, conceded 46, the latter conceded 33. Harbhajan, who bowled eight overs, conceded 39. He picked up a wicket.

The South Africans won the five-match series 4-0.
