Dravid-led India aren’t the WInners

India made five changes to their playing eleven – Sourav Ganguly, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Joginder Sharma, Harbhajan Singh and Zaheer Khan made way for Robin Uthappa, Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh, Anil Kumble and Sreesanth.

The West Indies made three changes to the eleven that played the Indians – Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Dwayne Smith and Ian Bradshaw made way for Brian Lara (who was leading the team), Lendl Simmons and One-day International Rayad Emrit.

On winning the toss, Lara inserted the Indians. Gautam Gambhir, who faced half-a-dozen balls, didn’t get off the mark. A dozen balls into the match, he was caught by Simmons. Needless to say, Daren Powell was in seventh heaven.

India scored 50 off 7.2 overs. The West Indies had conceded 11 extras at that point. The second-wicket pair put on 50 off 36 balls. While the Karnataka batsman’s contribution to the (Uthap)partnership was 34, Raina’s contribution to it was seven. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was 10.

The second Powerplay of India’s innings was between the 11th and the 15th over. Uthappa’s half-century – which included eight boundaries and a six – came off 32 balls. He eventually scored 70. His 41-ball innings included 11 boundaries and a couple of sixes. Fifty balls later, he was caught by Simmons. Gayle broke the 88-run partnership.

India scored 100 off 11.3 overs. The West Indies had conceded 17 extras at that point. The third Powerplay of India’s innings was between the 16th and the 20th over. Raina, whose 36-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 23. Thirty-one balls after Uthappa’s dismissal, he was caught by Lara. Jerome Taylor broke the run-a-ball innings.

India scored 150 off 19.4 overs. The West Indies had conceded 23 extras at that point. The fourth-wicket pair put on 50 off as many balls. The fourth-wicket pair put on 100 off as 105 balls. While Tendulkar’s contribution to the partnership was 45, Dravid’s contribution to it was 53. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was a couple. The Wall, who faced 67 balls, eventually scored 57. A hundred and fifteen balls later, he was caught by Emrit. Gayle broke the 106-run partnership.

Tendulkar, whose 66-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 60. Fifteen balls later, he was caught by Runako Morton. Dwayne Br(av)oke the five-run stand. India scored 250 off 40.4 overs. The West Indies had conceded 27 extras at that point.

Yuvraj, whose 21-ball innings included a boundary, scored 10. Twenty-seven balls later, he was caught by Bravo, who broke the 18-run stand. The seventh-wicket didn’t get off the mark. Dinesh Karthik, who faced 17 balls, scored eight. A couple of balls later, he was caught by Ramdin off the bowling of Bravo.

Ajit Agarkar, who faced 10 balls, scored a couple. Sixteen balls later, he was caught by Morton. Marlon Samuels broke the four-run stand. Ramesh Powar, who faced 13 balls, scored five. Thirteen balls later, he was caught by Taylor, who broke the six-run stand.

Kumble, who faced eight balls, scored three. He was unbeaten. Sreesanth, who faced five balls, scored a run. Seven balls later, he was caught by Morton. Bravo broke the three-run stand.

The West Indies conceded 29 extras. India were dismissed 268 off 48 overs. Emrit, who bowled five wicketless overs, conceded 34. Powell bowled half-a-dozen overs, including a maiden. He conceded 38, picking up a wicket. Samuels, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 41. He picked up a wicket.

Taylor, who bowled eight overs, conceded 45. He picked up a couple of scalps, as did Gayle, who bowled 10 overs, conceding 57. Bravo, who bowled nine overs, conceded 39. He picked up four scalps.

The West Indian openers didn’t get off the mark. The Jamaican, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. A ball into the chase, he was trapped (Gay)leg before wicket by Agarkar. Morton, who faced eight balls, scored a run. Fifteen balls later, he was caught by Karthik. Agarkar broke the 27-run stand.

The West Indies scored 50 off seven overs. India had conceded 15 extras at that point. The second Powerplay of the West Indies’ innings was between the 11th and the 15th over. The third-wicket pair put on 50 off 36 balls. While Devon Smith’s contribution to the partnership was 18, Samuels’ contribution to it was 29. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was three.

Smith, whose 34-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries, scored 33. Fifty-eight balls later, he was caught by Dravid. Kumble broke the 65-run partnership. Seventy-four balls into the chase, the first drinks break was taken. The West Indies had scored 92 for the loss of three wickets at that point. Samuels was batting on 38.

The third Powerplay of the West Indies’ innings was between the 16th and the 20th over. Ninety-seven balls into the chase, the West Indies scored 100. India had scored 20 extras at that point.

Samuels’ half-century – which included nine boundaries – came off 42 balls. The fourth-wicket pair put on 50 off 45 balls. While Samuels’ contribution to the partnership was 27, Lara’s contribution to it was 23. Extras had no contribution to the partnership.

Lara’s half-century – which included seven boundaries and a six – came off 55 balls. Thirty-one overs into the chase, the second drinks break was taken. The West Indies had scored 209 for the loss of three wickets at that point. While Samuels was batting on 93, Lara was batting on 55.

Samuels, whose 95-ball innings included a dozen boundaries and a six, eventually scored 98. A hundred and twenty-seven balls later, he was caught by Karthik. Agarkar broke the run-a-ball stand. The West Indies scored 250 off 39.5 overs. India had conceded 26 extras at that point.

Lara, whose 88-ball innings included 10 boundaries and a couple of sixes, eventually scored 83. Forty-five balls later, he was caught by Uthappa. Powar broke the 38-run stand. Bravo, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored four. His runs came by way of a boundary. Half-a-dozen balls later, he was Raina. Sreesanth broke the four-run stand.

Simmons, whose 24-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 17. Four balls later, he was caught by Uthappa. Powar broke the run-a-ball stand. Ramdin, who faced four balls, scored as many. His innings included a boundary. He was unbeaten, as was Emrit, who faced a couple of balls, failing to get off the mark.

India eventually conceded 30 extras. The West Indies, who scored 270 for the loss of seven wickets off 43.4 overs, won by three wickets with 38 balls to spare. Tendulkar, who bowled five wicketless overs, conceded 33.

Sreesanth, who bowled 8.4 overs, conceded 67. He picked up a wicket, as did Kumble, who bowled 10 overs, conceding 67. Powar, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 53. He picked up a couple of wickets. Agarkar bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 45, picking up three scalps.

India led the four-match series 2-1.
