SA outplay Dravid-led India again

The match was attended by 17,353 people. India made four changes to their playing (Pat)eleven – Wasim Jaffer, Suresh Raina, Dinesh Mongia and Munaf made way for Virender Sehwag, Dinesh Karthik, Irfan Pathan and Anil Kumble. South Africa made just one change to the (N)eleven that last played the Indians – Andre made way for Andrew Hall.

On winning the toss, Graeme Smith, South Africa’s skipper, chose to bat. Their openers didn’t get off the mark. Smith, who faced a couple of balls, didn’t open his account. A couple of balls into the match, he was dismissed by Zaheer Khan.

The second-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark either. Jacques Kallis, who faced a couple of balls, didn’t open his account. A couple of balls later, he was caught by Sachin Tendulkar off the bowling of Khan.

Loots Bosman, whose 26-ball innings included a boundary, scored half-a-dozen. Sixty balls later, he was caught by Tendulkar. Khan broke the 38-run stand. Herschelle Gibbs, whose 40-ball innings included seven boundaries, scored 35. Eight balls later, he was caught by Mohammad Kaif. Pathan broke the four-run stand.

South Africa scored 50 off 11.3 overs. India had conceded a couple of extras at that point. Sixteen overs into the match, the first drinks break was taken. South Africa had scored 56 for the loss of four wickets at that point. While AB de Villiers was batting on 11, Mark Boucher was batting on a couple.

The fifth-wicket pair put on 29. Boucher, who faced 16 balls, scored four. Forty-one balls later, Pathan and Kumble ran him out. De Villiers, whose 30-ball innings included five boundaries, scored 29. Three balls later, he was caught by Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Ajit Agarkar broke the five-run stand.

South Africa scored 100 off 28.1 overs. India had conceded three extras at that point. Thirty-three overs into the match, the second drinks break was taken. South Africa had scored 117 for the loss of half-a-dozen wickets at that point. While Justin Kemp, the player of the match, was batting on 13, Shaun Pollock was batting on 27.

The seventh-wicket pair put on 50 off 93 balls. While Kemp’s contribution to the partnership was 15, Pollock’s contribution to it was 33. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was a couple. South Africa scored 150 off 37.2 overs. India had conceded four extras at that point.

The eighth-wicket pair put on 50 off 48 balls. While Kemp’s contribution to the partnership was 23, Hall’s contribution to it was 28. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was a couple. Kemp’s half-century – which included four boundaries and a couple of sixes – came off 67 balls.

South Africa scored 200 off 44.4 overs. India had conceded seven extras at that point. The eighth-wicket pair put on 100 off 68 balls. While Kemp’s contribution to the partnership was 59, Hall’s contribution to it was 41. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was four. Hall’s half-century – which included half-a-dozen boundaries – came off 44 balls.

Kemp, whose 89-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries and seven sixes, scored 100. He was unbeaten, as was Hall, who scored 56. His 47-ball innings included seven boundaries.

India eventually conceded 11 extras. South Africa scored 274 for the loss of seven wickets off 50 overs. Tendulkar, who faced three wicketless overs, conceded 13. Harbhajan Singh, who bowled 10 wicketless overs, conceded 63. Kumble bowled 10 wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 24.

Pathan bowled eight overs, including a maiden. He conceded 60, picking up a wicket. Agarkar, who bowled nine overs, conceded 71. He picked up a wicket. Khan bowled 10 overs, including four maidens. He conceded 42, picking up three scalps.

The chase was preceded by the lunch interval. India’s openers didn’t get off the mark. Sehwag, who faced four balls, didn’t open his account. Four balls into the chase, he was caught by Hall off the bowling of Pollock. 

Tendulkar, who faced nine balls, scored a couple. Twenty-four balls later, he was caught by Hall. Needless to say, Pollock was in seventh heaven. Kaif, whose 17-ball innings included a boundary, scored 10. Twenty-five balls later, Pollock broke the 10-run stand.

Sixteen overs into the chase, the first drinks break of India’s innings was taken. They had scored 44 for the loss of three wickets at that point. While Rahul Dravid, India’s skipper, was batting on 17, Karthik was batting on 14.

Karthik, whose 23-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and a six, didn’t add to the aforementioned score. Forty-five balls after Kaif’s dismissal, he was caught by Smith. Makhaya Ntini broke the 27-run stand.

The fifth-wicket pair put on 50 off 72 balls. While Dravid’s contribution to the partnership was 18, Dhoni’s contribution to it was 28. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was four. India scored 100 off 28.1 overs. South Africa had conceded five extras at that point.

Dhoni’s half-century – which included three boundaries and four sixes – came off 45 balls. He faced 48 balls, eventually scoring 55. Eighty-six balls later, he was caught by Bosman. Kallis broke the 85-run partnership. Dravid’s half-century – which included four boundaries – came off 91 balls.

Pathan, who faced 10 balls, scored just a run. Fourteen balls later, he was caught by Smith. Kallis broke the four-run stand. Harbhajan, who faced a dozen balls, scored 10. Eighteen balls later, he was caught by Smith. Hall broke the 15-run stand.

India scored 150 off 36.5 overs. South Africa had conceded five extras at that point. Agarkar, whose nine-ball innings included a boundary, scored half-a-dozen. Eleven balls after Harbhajan’s dismissal, he was caught by Smith. Hall broke the eight-run stand.

Dravid, whose 103-ball innings included four boundaries and a six, scored 63. Fourteen balls later, he was caught by Hall. Pollock broke the 12-run stand. Khan, who faced 11 balls, scored just a couple. He was unbeaten. The last-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Kumble, who faced three balls, didn’t open his account. Eight balls later, he was dismissed by Hall.

South Africa eventually conceded five extras. India, who were dismissed for 168 off 41.3 overs, lost by 106 runs. Kemp, who bowled a wicketless over, conceded 13. Smith, who bowled a couple of wicketless overs, conceded 10. Charl Langeveldt, who bowled five wicketless overs, conceded 31.

Ntini bowled seven overs, including two maidens. He conceded 13, picking up a wicket. Kallis, who bowled eight overs, conceded 29. He picked up two wickets. Hall, who bowled 9.3 overs, conceded 45. He picked up three scalps. Pollock bowled nine overs, including a maiden. He conceded 26, picking up four scalps.

South Africa led the five-match series 2-0.
