Dravid-led India beat the iSLanders

This was India’s last One-day International before the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies. It was a 47-overs-a-side match. India made a couple of changes to their playing (Pat)eleven – Sachin Tendulkar and Munaf made way for Robin Uthappa and Sreesanth.

Sri Lanka made changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Upul Tharanga and Nuwan Kulasekara made way for Chamara Silva, the player of the match, and Lasith Malinga.

On winning the toss, Rahul Dravid, India’s skipper, inserted the Sri Lankans, whose innings was preceded by a ground delay. Sanath Jayasuriya, whose 19-ball innings included three boundaries and a six, scored 22. Forty-six balls into the match, he was caught by Sourav Ganguly, the player of the series. Ajit Agarkar broke the 42-run stand.

Sri Lanka scored 50 off nine overs. India had conceded four extras. Although his eight-ball innings included a boundary, Mahela Jayawardene, Sri Lanka’s skipper, had no reason to be in seventh heaven – nine balls after Jayasuriya’s dismissal, Agarkar broke the eight-run stand.

The second Powerplay of Sri Lanka’s innings was between the 11th and the 15th over. Kumar Sangakkara, who faced a couple of balls, scored a run. Half-a-dozen balls after Jayawardene’s dismissal, he was caught by Uthappa. Zaheer Khan broke the two-run stand.

Marvan Atapattu, whose (Sreesan)thirty-seven-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 19. A dozen balls later, the Kerala pacer broke the four-run stand. Seventy-three balls into the match, the first drinks break was taken. Sri Lanka had scored 56 for the loss of four wickets at that point. Silva was batting on a couple.

The third Powerplay of Sri Lanka’s innings was between the 16th and the 19th over. Sri Lanka scored 100 off 23.2 overs. India had conceded eight extras. The fifth-wicket pair put on 50 off 70 balls. While Silva’s contribution to the partnership was 27, Tillakaratne Dilshan’s contribution to it was 22. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was three.

Twenty-five overs into the match, the second drinks break was taken. Sri Lanka had scored 121 for the loss of four wickets at that point. While Silva was batting on 38, Dilshan was batting on 26.

Dilshan, whose 44-ball innings included three boundaries, eventually scored 28. Eighty-five balls after Atapattu’s dismissal. He was caught by Uthappa. Ganguly broke the 68-run partnership.

Sri Lanka scored 150 off 33 overs. India had conceded nine extras. Russel Arnold, whose 34-ball innings included a six, scored 22. Sixty balls later, he was caught by Sreesanth. Virender Sehwag broke the 41-run stand.

Silva’s half-century – which included four boundaries and a six – came off 68 balls. Sri Lanka scored 200 off 41.3 overs. India had conceded 16 extras. The seventh-wicket pair put on 50 off 43 balls. While Silva’s contribution to the partnership was 21, Farveez Maharoof’s contribution to it was 20. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was nine.

Maharoof, whose run-a-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and a six, scored 28. Forty-eight balls later, he was caught by Dinesh Karthik. Khan broke the 64-run partnership. Sri Lanka scored 250 off 46.1 overs. India had conceded 20 extras.

Silva’s century – which included 11 boundaries and a six – scored 103 balls. He eventually scored 107. His run-a-ball innings included a dozen boundaries and the six. He was unbeaten, as was Malinga Bandara, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scoring five.

India eventually conceded 20 extras. Sri Lanka scored 259 for the loss of seven wickets off 47 overs. Harbhajan Singh, who bowled nine wicketless overs, conceded 48. Sehwag, who bowled four overs, conceded 27. He picked up a wicket. Ganguly, who bowled half-a-dozen overs, conceded 29. He picked up a wicket.

Sreesanth bowled eight overs, including a maiden. He conceded 46, picking up a wicket. Khan and Agarkar bowled 10 overs each, picking up a couple of scalps apiece. While the former, whose spell included a couple of maidens, conceded 54, the latter, whose spell conceded a maiden, conceded 52.

India had scored half-a-dozen without the loss of a wicket when Ganguly, who was batting on a run, retired hurt. They scored 50 off 6.4 overs. Sri Lanka had conceded eight extras at that point.

India’s openers had scored 50 off 42 balls. While Sehwag’s contribution to the partnership was 16, Uthappa’s contribution to it was 31. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was four. The second Powerplay of India’s innings was between the 11th and the 15th over.

Uthappa’s half-century – which included nine boundaries and a six – came off 33 balls. He eventually scored 52. His 37-ball innings included nine boundaries and a six. Seventy-two balls later, he was caught by Jayasuriya. Maharoof broke the 92-run partnership. 

A dozen overs into the chase, the first drink break was taken. India scored 92 for the loss of one wicket at that point. Sehwag was batting on 30. India scored 100 off 13.2 overs. Sri Lanka had conceded nine extras at that point.

Karthik, who faced nine balls, scored a run. Thirteen balls later, he was caught by Fernando, who broke the 14-run stand. When India scored 106 for the loss of a couple of wickets, Ganguly returned. 

The third Powerplay of India’s innings was between the 16th and the 19th over. The third-wicket pair put on a dozen. Sehwag, whose 44-ball innings included seven boundaries, scored 46. Eighteen balls later, Bandara and Sangakkara ran him out.

India scored 150 off 23.5 overs. Sri Lanka had conceded 10 extras at that point. The fourth-wicket pair put on 50 off 62 balls. While Ganguly’s contribution to the partnership was 22, Yuvraj Singh’s contribution to it was 28. Extras didn’t contribute to the partnership.

Twenty-nine overs into the chase, the first drink break was taken. India scored 171 for the loss of three wickets at that point. While Ganguly was batting on 32, Yuvraj was batting on 30.

India scored 200 off 33.4 overs. Sri Lanka had conceded 10 extras at that point. Yuvraj’s half-century – which included five boundaries and a six – came off 59 balls. The fourth-wicket pair put on 100 off 114 balls. While Ganguly’s contribution to the partnership was 39, Yuvraj Singh’s contribution to it was 61. Extras didn’t contribute to the partnership.

Ganguly’s half-century – which included a couple of boundaries and three sixes – came off 64 balls. India scored 250 off 40.4 overs. Sri Lanka had conceded 11 extras at that point.

Ganguly, whose 74-ball innings included three boundaries and as many sixes, scored 58. He was unbeaten, as was Yuvraj, who scored 95. His 83-ball innings included 11 boundaries and three sixes.

Sri Lanka eventually conceded 11 extras. India, who scored 263 for the loss of three wickets off 41 overs, won by seven wickets with half-a-dozen overs to spare. Jayasuriya and Arnold bowled a couple of wicketless overs each, conceding 10 apiece. Bandara, who bowled four wicketless overs, conceded 27.

Malinga and Dilshan bowled nine wicketless overs apiece. While the former, whose spell included a maiden, conceded 54, the latter conceded 34. Maharoof, who bowled half-a-dozen overs, conceded 60. He picked up a wicket, as did Fernando, who bowled nine overs, including a maiden. He conceded 56.

The Indians won the four-match series 2-1.
