Dravid-led India WIn, avenge losses

India made one change to their playing eleven – Irfan Pathan made way for Sreesanth. The West Indies made three changes to the (Fid)eleven that last played the Indians – Ian Bradshaw, Jerome Taylor and Edwards made way for Runako Morton, Marlon Samuels and Corey Collymore.

On winning the toss, Rahul Dravid, India’s skipper, chose to bat. The Wall, who faced (Smi)three balls, D(rav)id not get off the mark. Three balls into the match, he was caught by Carlton Baugh. Dwayne broke the 0ne-run stand. Virender Sehwag, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored a run. Ten balls later, Smith broke the five-run stand.

Suresh Raina, whose 15-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 11. Forty balls later, he was caught by Chris Gayle. Smith broke the 32-run stand. The second Powerplay of India’s innings was between the 11th and the 15th over.

The fourth-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Yuvraj Singh, who faced four balls, didn’t open his account. Ten balls later, he was caught by Baugh off the bowling of Smith. India scored 50 off 11.5 overs. The West Indies had conceded nine extras at that point.

The third Powerplay of India’s innings was between the 16th and the 20th over. Mahendra Singh Dhoni, whose 13-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 18. Twenty-nine balls after Yuvraj’s dismissal, Collymore broke the 31-run stand.

It was at that point that the first drinks break was taken. Sachin Tendulkar was batting on 27. Ajit Agarkar, who faced 15 balls, scored four. Twenty-seven balls later, Dwayne Br(av)oke the nine-run stand.

India scored 100 off 24.5 overs. The West Indies had conceded 17 extras at that point. The seventh-wicket pair put on 50 off 68 balls. While Tendulkar’s contribution to the partnership was 13, the contribution of Harbhajan Singh – the player of the match – to it was 31. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was seven.

Tendulkar’s half-century – which included five boundaries – came off 91 balls. Thirty-four overs into the match, the second drinks break was taken. India had scored 142 for the loss of half-a-dozen wickets at that point. While Tendulkar was batting on 53, Harbhajan was batting on 34.

India had scored 150 off 34.4 overs. The West Indies had conceded 21 extras at that point. Harbhajan, whose 60-ball innings included a boundary and a couple of sixes, scored 37. Ninety-five balls after Agarkar’s dismissal, he was caught by Baugh. Gayle broke the 78-run partnership.

The eighth-wicket pair put on a run. Tendulkar, whose 102-ball innings included seven boundaries, scored 65. Half-a-dozen balls later, Samuels ran him out. R P Singh, who faced 16 balls, scored a couple. Fifteen balls later, Gayle broke the three-run stand.

The tenth-wicket pair put on a couple. Sreesanth, who faced four balls, didn’t open his account. A couple of balls after R P’s dismissal, Samuels and Baugh ran him out. Patel, who faced a couple of balls, scored as many. He was unbeaten.

The West Indies eventually conceded 22 extras. India were dismissed for 162 off 39.3 overs. Samuels, who bowled four overs, conceded 17. He was wicketless, as was Wavell Hinds, who bowled half-a-dozen overs, conceding 41.

Bravo, who bowled half-a-dozen overs, conceding 16. He picked up a wicket, as did Collymore, who bowled eight overs, including a maiden. He conceded 41. Gayle, who bowled 5.3 overs, conceded 13. He picked up a couple of wickets. Smith bowled 10 overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 31, picking up four scalps.

(Shiv)N(ar)ine overs into the chase, there was a lunch interval. The West Indies had scored 34 without the loss of a wicket at that point. While Chanderpaul was batting on 20 at that point, Morton was batting on 11.

The second Powerplay of the West Indies’ innings was between the 11th and 15th over. Chanderpaul, whose 33-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 21. Seventy-four balls into the chase, he was caught by Sehwag. Patel broke the 44-run stand.

The West Indies scored 50 off 14.3 overs. India had scored eight extras at that point. Ramnaresh Sarwan, who faced a dozen balls, scored a couple. Sixteen balls after his compatriot’s D(hon)ismissal, he was caught behind. Patel broke the eight-run stand.

The third Powerplay of the West Indies’ innings was between the 16th and 20th over. Morton, whose 50-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 27. Five balls later, he was caught by Dhoni. Sreesanth broke the six-run stand.

Samuels, whose run-a-ball innings included a boundary, scored five. Twenty-one balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Agarkar, who broke the five-run stand. Gayle had no reason to be in seventh heaven – he scored just a run. Seventeen balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by R P, who broke the seven-run stand.

Smith, who faced five balls, scored a dozen. His runs came by way of boundaries. Nine balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Agarkar, who broke the 13-run stand.

Twenty-four overs into the chase, the first drinks break of the West Indies’ innings was taken. They had scored 87 for the loss of half-a-dozen wickets at that point. While Hinds was batting on five, Bravo was batting on four.

Bravo, who faced 14 balls, eventually scored 10. Twenty-eight balls after Gayle’s D(hon)ismissal, he was stumped. Harbhajan broke the 13-run stand.

The West Indies scored 100 off 28.4 overs. India had conceded 12 extras at that point. Hinds, who faced 57 balls, scored eight. Thirty-nine balls later, he was caught by Harbhajan, who broke the 22-run stand.

Two hundred and thirty-six balls into the chase, the second drinks break of the West Indies’ innings was taken. They had scored 145 for the loss of nine wickets at that point. Brian Lara, the West Indies’ skipper, scored 39.

The left-hander, whose 48-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries, eventually scored 40. He was unbeaten. Baugh, whose 12-ball innings included a boundary, scored half-a-dozen. Thirty-two balls later, he was caught by Dravid. Harbhajan broke the 27-run stand.

Collymore, who faced five balls, didn’t open his account. Ten balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Sreesanth, who broke the one-run stand. India eventually conceded 14 extras. The West Indies, who were dismissed for 146 off 41 overs, lost by 16 runs.

R P, who bowled five overs, conceded 27. He picked up a wicket. Sreesanth, who bowled eight overs, conceded 25. He picked up two wickets. Patel and Agarkar bowled 10 overs, including a maiden, each, picking up two wickets apiece. While the former conceded 31, the latter conceded 22. Harbhajan, who bowled eight overs, conceded 35. He picked up three scalps.
