Kohli-led India beat Australia narrowly

While India made no changes to their playing eleven, Australia made a couple of changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Ashton Turner and Jason Behrendorff made way for Shaun Marsh and Nathan Lyon.

On winning the toss, Aaron Finch, Australia’s skipper, inserted the hosts.

The first Powerplay of India’s innings – which was the mandatory Powerplay – was between the first and the 10th over. They scored 39 and lost a couple of wickets.

India’s openers didn’t get off the (Shar)mark. Rohit, who faced an over, didn’t open his account. An over into the match, he was caught by Adam Zampa off the bowling of Pat Cummins.

Shikhar Dhawan, whose 29-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 21. Forty-five balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Glenn Maxwell, who broke the 38-run stand.

In fact, Australia had sought a bowling review at that point. It was upheld by umpire Nitin Menon.

The second Powerplay of India’s innings – which was the mandatory Powerplay – was between the 11th and the 40th over. They scored 165, and lost four wickets.

India scored 50 off 12.5 overs (77 balls). Australia had conceded a couple of extras at that point.

Ambati Rayudu, whose 32-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 18. Fifty-one balls after Dhawan’s dismissal, he was trapped leg before wicket by Lyon, who broke the 37-run stand.

In fact, India had sought a batting review at that point. It was struck down by Menon.

In fact, it was at that point that the first drinks break was taken. India had scored 75 for the loss of three wickets. Virat Kohli, India’s skipper and the player of the match, was batting on 31.

India scored 100 off 20.1 overs (121 balls). Australia had conceded half-a-dozen extras at that point.

Kohli’s half-century – which included five boundaries – came off 55 balls.

The fourth-wicket pair put on 50 off as many balls. While Kohli’s contribution to the partnership was 20, Vijay Shankar's contribution to it was 28. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was a couple.

India scored 150 off 28.1 overs (169 balls). Australia had conceded nine extras at that point.

The fourth-wicket pair eventually put on 81. Shankar, whose 41-ball innings included five boundaries and the only six of the innings, scored 46. Seventy-one balls later, Adam Zampa ran him out.

Kedar Jadhav, whose 12-ball innings included a boundary, scored 11. Twenty-one balls later, he was caught by Finch. Zampa broke the 15-run stand.

The sixth-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Mahendra Singh, who faced a ball, D(hon)idn't open his account. The next ball, he was caught by Usman Khawaja off the bowling of Zampa.

A hundred and ninety-five balls into the match, the second drinks break was taken. India had scored 171 for the loss of half-a-dozen wickets at that point. Kohli was batting on 66.

India scored 200 off 38.4 overs (232 balls). Australia had conceded 11 extras at that point.

The third Powerplay of India’s innings – which was the mandatory Powerplay – was between the 41st and the 50th over. They scored 46, and lost four wickets.

The seventh-wicket pair put on 50 off 63 balls. While Kohli’s contribution to the partnership was 33, Ravindra Jadeja’s contribution to it was 14. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was three.

Kohli’s ton – which included nine boundaries – came off 107 balls.

Jadeja, who faced 40 balls, eventually scored 21. Eighty balls after Dhoni’s dismissal, he was caught by Khawaja. Cummins broke the 67-run partnership.

Kohli, whose 120-ball innings included 10 boundaries, eventually scored 116. Eight balls later, he was caught by Stoinis. Cummins broke the 10-run stand.

Kuldeep Yadav, who faced three balls, scored as many. Four balls later, Cummins broke the one-run stand.

Mohammed Shami, who faced four balls, scored a couple. He was unbeaten. Jasprit Bumrah, who faced a couple of balls, didn’t get off the mark. Three balls after Yadav’s dismissal, Nathan Coulter-Nile broke the one-run stand.

Australia eventually conceded a dozen extras. India were dismissed for 250 off 48.2 overs. Stoinis, who bowled a wicketless over, conceded a dozen.

Coulter-Nile, who bowled 8.2 overs, conceded 52. He picked up a wicket, as did Maxwell and Lyon, who bowled 10 overs each. While the former conceded 45, the latter conceded 42. Zampa, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 62. He picked up a couple of wickets.

Cummins, who bowled nine overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 29, picking up four scalps.

Eighteen overs into the match, the first drinks break was taken. Australia had scored 97 for the loss of a couple of wickets at that point. While Marsh was batting on eight, Peter Handscomb had scored half-a-dozen.

Australia scored 100 off 18.5 overs (113 balls). India had conceded eight extras at that point.

Marsh, who faced 27 balls, eventually scored 16. Fifty balls after Khawaja’s dismissal, he was caught by Dhoni. Jadeja broke the 39-run stand.

Maxwell, who faced 18 balls, scored just four. Twenty-eight balls later, Yadav broke the 10-run stand.

Australia scored 150 off 33.2 overs (200 balls). India had conceded 10 extras at that point.

Thirty-four overs into the match, the second drinks break was taken. Australia had scored 152 for the loss of four wickets at that point. While Handscomb was batting on 36, Stoinis had scored 11.

The fifth-wicket pair put on 39. Handscomb, whose 59-ball innings included four boundaries, eventually scored 48. Fifty-four balls later, Jadeja ran him out.

The third Powerplay of Australia’s innings – which was the mandatory Powerplay – was between the 41st and the 50th over. They scored 56, and lost five wickets.

Australia scored 200 off 42.3 overs (255 balls). India had conceded 13 extras at that point. That was, incidentally, the number of extras they eventually conceded.

Alex Carey, whose 24-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 22. Fifty-four balls after Handscomb’s dismissal, Yadav broke the 47-run stand.

Coulter-Nile, who faced four balls, scored as many. Five balls later, Bumrah broke the run-a-ball stand. The eighth-wicket pair D(hon)idn’t get off the mark. Cummins, who faced a couple of balls, didn’t open his account. A couple of balls later, he was caught behind off the bowling of Bumrah.

Stoinis’ half-century – which included four boundaries and a six – came off 62 balls. He eventually conceded 65 balls, scoring 52. Twenty-one balls after Cummins' dismissal, Australia sought a batting review, and the umpire's call was taken by Menon. He was trapped leg before wicket by Shankar, who broke the 17-run stand.

Lyon, whose run-a-ball innings included a boundary, scored half-a-dozen. He was unbeaten. Zampa, who faced a couple of balls, scored as many. A couple of balls after Stoinis’ dismissal, Shankar broke the two-run stand.

Australia, who were dismissed for 242 off 49.3 overs, lost by eight runs.  Shami bowled 10 wicketless overs, conceding 60. Jadhav bowled eight overs, conceding 33. He picked up a wicket, as did Jadeja, who bowled 10 overs, conceding 48.

Shankar bowled nine balls, conceding 15. He picked up two wickets, as did Bumrah, who bowled 10 overs, conceding 29. Yadav bowled 10 overs, conceding 54. He picked up three scalps.

India led the five-match series 2-0.
