Kohli leads; SL crush India

India made a couple of changes to their playing eleven – Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Bhuvneshwar Kumar made way for Murali Vijay and Mohammed Shami.

Sri Lanka made three changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Tillakaratne Dilshan, Jeevan Mendis and Thisara Perera made way for Upul Tharanga, the player of the match, Dinesh Chandimal and Sachithra Senanayake.

On winning the toss, Virat Kohli, India’s skipper, inserted the Sri Lankans.

The first Powerplay of Sri Lanka’s innings – which was the mandatory Powerplay – was between the first and the 10th over. They scored 47, without the loss of a wicket.

Sri Lanka’s openers put on 50 off 10.5 overs (65 balls). India had conceded four extras at that point. While Tharanga’s contribution to the partnership was 26, Mahela Jayawardene’s contribution to it was 20.

Seventeen overs into the match, the first drinks break was taken. Sri Lanka had scored 82 without the loss of a wicket at that point. While Tharanga’s contribution to the partnership was 33, Jayawardene’s contribution to it was 44.

Jayawardene’s half-century – which included four boundaries and a six – came off 60 balls.

Sri Lanka’s openers put on 100 off 21.1 overs (127 balls). India had conceded five extras at that point. While Tharanga’s contribution to the partnership was 44, Jayawardene’s contribution to it was 51.

Tharanga’s half-century – which included five boundaries – came off 76 balls.

Sri Lanka’s openers put on 150 off 30.1 overs (181 balls). India had conceded nine extras at that point. While Tharanga’s contribution to the partnership was 65, Jayawardene’s contribution to it was 76.

Sri Lanka’s openers put on 200 off 37.2 overs (224 balls). India had conceded 10 extras at that point.

Jayawardene’s ton – which included nine boundaries and a six – came off 107 balls.

While Tharanga’s contribution to the 200-run partnership was 90, Jayawardene’s contribution to it was 100.

Jayawardene, whose 112-ball innings included nine boundaries and a couple of sixes, eventually scored 107. Two hundred and thirty-two balls into the match, he was caught by Umesh Yadav. Ravichandran Ashwin broke the 213-run partnership.

Tharanga’s ton – which included 11 boundaries – came off 124 balls.

Sri Lanka scored 250 off 42 overs (252 balls). India had conceded 15 extras at that point.

The second-wicket pair put on 50 off 27 balls. While Tharanga’s contribution to the partnership was 31, the contribution of Angelo Mathews, Sri Lanka’s skipper, to it was 16. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was four.

Sri Lanka scored 300 off 47 overs (282 balls). India had conceded 18 extras at that point.

Tharanga’s 150 – which included 18 boundaries and a six – came off as many balls.

The second-wicket pair put on 100 off 56 balls. While Tharanga’s contribution to the partnership was 58, Mathews’ contribution to it was 36. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was half-a-dozen.

Tharanga, whose 159-ball innings included 19 boundaries and three sixes, eventually scored 174. He was unbeaten, as was Mathews, who scored 44. His 29-ball innings included four boundaries and a six.

India eventually conceded 23 extras. Sri Lanka scored 348 for the loss of a wicket off 50 overs.

Suresh Raina and Kohli bowled a couple of wicketless overs apiece. While the former conceded 10, the latter conceded nine. Yadav, who bowled eight wicketless overs, conceded 64.

Ishant Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja bowled nine wicketless overs apiece. While the former conceded 68, the latter conceded 55. Shami, who bowled 10 wicketless overs, conceded 68. Ashwin, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 67. He picked up a wicket.

Rohit Sharma, who faced 13 balls, scored five. Twenty-six balls into the chase, he was caught by Mathews. Nuwan Kulasekara broke the 12-run stand.

India scored 50 off 13.4 overs (82 balls). Sri Lanka had conceded a couple of extras at that point.

Shikhar Dhawan, whose 42-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 24. Sixty-one balls later, he was caught by Tharanga. Rangana Herath broke the 40-run stand.

Kohli, who faced five balls, scored a couple. Eight balls later, he was caught by Lasith Malinga. Mathews broke the five-run stand.

Vijay, whose 46-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 30. Sixteen balls later, Malinga broke the eight-run stand.

India scored 100 off 25.1 overs (151 balls). Sri Lanka had conceded 13 extras at that point.

The fifth-wicket pair put on 50 off 53 balls. While Karthik’s contribution to the partnership was 19, Suresh Raina’s contribution to it was 21. Extra’s contribution to the partnership was 10.

Karthik, whose 41-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 22. Fifty-eight balls later, he was stumped by Kumar Sangakkara. Herath broke the 53-run partnership.

The sixth-wicket pair put on 24. Raina, whose run-a-ball innings included four boundaries, eventually scored 24. Thirty-four balls later, Malinga, Jayawardene and Mathews ran him out.

Thirty-five overs into the chase, the second drinks break was taken. India had scored 145 for the loss of half-a-dozen wickets at that point. While Jadeja’s contribution to the partnership was 14, Ashwin had scored a run.

Jadeja, whose 62-ball innings included four boundaries and the only six of the innings, was unbeaten.

The second Powerplay of India’s innings – which was the batting Powerplay – was between the 36th and the 40th over. They scored 14, for the loss of a couple of wickets.

India scored 150 off 36.4 overs (220 balls). Sri Lanka had conceded 14 extras at that point.

Ashwin, who faced 13 balls, scored just four. Twenty-three balls later, he was caught by Malinga. Senanayake broke the 11-run stand.

The eighth-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Shami, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. The next ball, he was dismissed by Senanayake.

Ishant had no reason to be in seventh heaven – he scored just a couple. Sixteen balls later, he was caught by Sangakkara. Herath broke the 13-run stand.

Yadav, who faced half-a-dozen balls, didn’t open his account. Twenty-six balls later, Malinga broke the 21-run stand.

Sri Lanka eventually conceded 16 extras. India, who were dismissed for 187 for 44.5 overs, lost by 161 runs. Mathews bowled eight overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 23, picking up a wicket. Kulasekara, who bowled nine overs, conceded 37. He picked up a wicket.

Malinga, who bowled 7.5 overs, conceded 40. He picked up a couple of wickets, as did Senanayake, who bowled 10 overs, conceding 46. Herath, who bowled 10 overs, conceding 37.
