NZ beat Dhoni-led India narrowly

India made no changes to their playing eleven.

New Zealand made three changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – James Neesham, Doug Bracewell and Ish Sodhi made way for Anton Devcich, Matt Henry and Trent Boult.

On winning the toss, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, India’s skipper, inserted the visitors.

The first Powerplay of New Zealand’s innings – which was the mandatory Powerplay – was between the first and the 10th over. They scored 50, and lost a wicket.

New Zealand’s openers failed to get off the mark. Guptill, who faced a couple of balls, didn’t open his account. A couple of balls (Mart)into the match, he was dismissed by Umesh Yadav.

New Zealand scored 50 off 10 overs (60 balls). India had conceded three extras at that point. That was, incidentally, the number of extras they eventually conceded.

The second-wicket pair put on 50 off 58 balls. While Tom Latham’s contribution to the partnership was 19, the contribution of Kane Williamson, New Zealand’s skipper and the player of the match, to it was 28. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was three.

The second Powerplay of New Zealand’s innings – which was the mandatory Powerplay – was between the 11th and the 40th over. They scored 152, and lost a couple of wickets.

Williamson’s half-century – which included eight boundaries and a six – came off 56 balls.

Sixteen overs into the match, the first drinks break was taken. New Zealand had scored 90 for the loss of a wicket at that point. While Latham was batting on 31, Williamson was batting on 56.

Thirty-three overs into the match, the second drinks break was taken. New Zealand had scored 165 for the loss of three wickets at that point. While Williamson was batting on 92, Corey Anderson was batting on three.

Williamson’s ton – which included 13 boundaries and a six – came off 109 balls.

Luke Ronchi, who faced 10 balls, scored half-a-dozen. Five balls later, he was caught by Dhoni. Axar Patel broke the three-run stand.

Mitchell Santner, who faced 16 balls, scored nine. He was unbeaten.

Devcich, who faced half-a-dozen balls, had no reason to be in seventh heaven – 10 balls later, he was caught by Patel. Jasprit Bumra broke the eight-run stand.

Tim Southee, who faced a couple of balls, didn’t get off the mark. Four balls later, Bumrah broke the one-run stand.

Henry, whose faced a dozen balls, scored half-a-dozen. Twenty-one balls later, Bumrah broke the 12-run stand.

Boult, whose four-ball innings included a boundary, scored five. He was unbeaten.

New Zealand scored 242 for the loss of nine wickets off 50 overs.

Hardik Pandya, who bowled nine wicketless overs, conceded 45.

Jadhav, who bowled a couple of overs, conceded 11. He picked up a wicket.

Yadav, who bowled nine overs, conceded 42. He picked up a wicket.

Patel, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 49. He picked up a wicket.

Mishra and Bumrah bowled 10 overs each, picking up three scalps apiece. While the former conceded 60, the latter conceded 35.

Jadhav, whose 37-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and as many sixes, eventually scored 41. Seventy-one balls after Pandey’s dismissal, he was caught by Ronchi. Henry broke the 66-run partnership.

New Zealand eventually conceded 13 extras. India, who were dismissed for 236 off 49.3 overs, lost by half-a-dozen runs.

Devcich, who bowled nine wicketless overs, conceded 48.

Henry and Santner bowled 10 overs each, picking up a wicket apiece. While the former conceded 51, the latter conceded 49.

Guptill, who bowled an over, conceded half-a-dozen. He picked up a couple of wickets, as did Boult, who bowled 10 overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 25.

Southee, who bowled 9.3 overs, conceded 52. He picked up three scalps.
