Kohli-led India trounce Sri Lanka

India (Shar)made (Cha)half-a-dozen changes to their playing (Pat)eleven – Ajinkya Rahane, Dinesh Karthik, Ravindra Jadeja, the Yadavs (Kuldeep and Umesh) and Mohammed Shami made way for Rohit, Lokesh Rahul, Axar, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah and Yuzvendra.

Sri Lanka made five changes to the eleven that (Ase)last played the Indians – Kusal Perera, Gunaratne, Dinesh Chandimal, Suranga Lakmal and Nuwan Pradeep made way for Upul Tharanga (who was leading the team), Chamara Kapugedera, Wanindu Hasaranga, Lakshan Sandakan and One-day International debutant Vishwa Fernando.

On winning the toss, Virat Kohli, India’s skipper, inserted the hosts.

The first Powerplay of Sri Lanka’s innings – which was the mandatory Powerplay – was between the first and the 10th over. They scored 55, without the loss of a wicket.

Sri Lanka’s 50 off 8.5 overs (53 balls). India had conceded three extras at that point. While Niroshan Dickwella’s contribution to the partnership was 20, Danushka Gunathilaka’s contribution to it was 28.

The second Powerplay of Sri Lanka’s innings – which was the mandatory Powerplay – was between the 11th and the 40th over. They scored 141, for the loss of eight wickets.

Gunathilaka, whose 44-ball innings included four boundaries, eventually scored 35. Fourteen overs into the match, he was caught by Rahul. Chahal broke the 74-run partnership.

Sixteen overs into the match, the first drinks break was taken. Sri Lanka had scored 81 for the loss of a wicket at that point. While Dickwella was batting on 37, Kusal Mendis had scored a run.

Sri Lanka scored 100 off 18.2 overs (110 balls). India had conceded eight extras at that point.

Dickwella’s half-century – which included five boundaries – came off 65 balls.

The second-wicket pair put on 50 off as many balls. While Dickwella’s contribution to the partnership was 23, Mendis’ contribution to it was 29. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was a run.

A hundred and forty-seven balls into the match, Sri Lanka sought a batting review. Dickwella, the batsman, eventually scored 64 off 74 balls, which included eight boundaries. It was struck down by Sri Lankan umpire Ruchira Palliyaguruge. He was trapped leg before wicket by Kedar Jadhav, who broke the 65-run partnership.

Sri Lanka scored 150 off 27 overs (162 balls). India had conceded 10 extras at that point.

Mendis, whose 37-ball innings included five boundaries, eventually scored 36. Sixteen balls after Dickwella’s dismissal, Axar broke the 11-run stand.

Tharanga, who faced 23 balls, scored 13. Thirty-one balls later, he was caught by Shikhar Dhawan, the player of the match. Jadhav broke the 16-run stand.

A hundred and ninety-four balls into the match, the second drinks break was taken. Sri Lanka had scored 166 for the loss of four wickets at that point. Mathews was batting on eight.

Mathews, whose 50-ball innings included a boundary and a six, eventually scored 36. He was unbeaten.

The fifth-wicket pair put on three. Kapugedera, who faced a couple of balls, scored a run. Half-a-dozen balls after Tharanga, Kohli ran him out.

Hasaranga, who faced five balls, scored a couple. Half-a-dozen balls later, he was caught by Jadhav. Needless to say, Patel was in seventh heaven.

Thisara Perera, who faced five balls, didn’t get off the mark. Nine balls later, Jasprit Bumrah broke the two-run stand.

Sandakan, who faced eight balls, scored five. Eighteen balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Patel, who broke the nine-run stand.

The third Powerplay of Sri Lanka’s innings – which was the mandatory Powerplay – was between the 41st and the 50th over. They scored 20, for the loss of a couple of wickets.

Sri Lanka scored 200 off 40.3 overs (243 balls). India had conceded 14 extras at that point.

Lasith Malinga, whose six-ball innings included a six, scored eight. Fifteen balls after Sandakan’s dismissal, he was stumped by Dhoni. Chahal broke the 22-run stand.

Fernando, who faced half-a-dozen balls, didn’t get off the mark. A dozen balls later, Bumrah had a reason to be in seventh heaven.

India eventually conceded 16 extras. Sri Lanka were dismissed for 216 off 43.2 overs.

Hardik Pandya and Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowled half-a-dozen wicketless overs apiece. While the former conceded 35, the latter conceded 33.

Jadhav, who bowled five overs, conceded 26. He picked up a couple of wickets.

Bumrah, who bowled 6.2 overs, conceded 22. He picked up a couple of wickets.

Chahal, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 60. He picked up a couple of wickets.

Patel, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 34. He picked up three wickets.

The second-wicket pair put on 100 off 79 balls. While Dhawan’s contribution to the partnership was 62, Kohli’s contribution to it was 38. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was a run.

India scored 150 off 21.5 overs (131 balls).

Dhawan’s ton – which included 16 boundaries and a couple of sixes – came off 71 balls.

The second-wicket pair put on 150 off 116 balls. While Dhawan’s contribution to the partnership was 93, Kohli’s contribution to it was 56. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was a run.

India scored 200 off 26.3 overs (159 balls).

Dhawan, whose 90-ball innings included 20 boundaries and three sixes, eventually scored 132. He was unbeaten, as was Kohli, who eventually scored 82. His 70-ball innings included 10 boundaries and a six.

Kohli’s run-a-ball half-century included half-a-dozen boundaries.

India, who eventually scored 220 for the loss of a wicket off 28.5 overs, won by nine wickets with 127 balls to spare.

Obviously, all the six bowlers used were wicketless.

Thisara and Mathews bowled a couple of overs apiece. While the former conceded 18, the latter conceded nine.

Hasaranga, who bowled 4.5 overs, conceded 35.

Sandakan and Fernando bowled half-a-dozen overs apiece. While the former conceded 63, the latter conceded 43.

Malinga, who bowled eight overs, conceded 52.
