India made three Ch(auh)anges to their playing eleven – Navjot Singh Sidhu, Saba Karim and Nilesh Kulkarni made way for Nayan Mongia, Rajesh and Abey Kuruvilla. Sri Lanka made just one change to the eleven that last played the Indians – Ruwan Kalpage made way for Hashan Tillakaratne.

Tendulkar, India’s skipper, won the toss, (Sach)inserting the hosts. Sanath Jayasuriya, whose 52-ball innings included 10 boundaries and a couple of sixes, scored 73. Venkatesh Prasad broke the 91-run stand.

Roshan Mahanama, whose 58-ball innings included three boundaries and a six, scored 53. He was caught by Ajay Jadeja, the player of the match. Robin Singh broke the 108-run partnership. Aravinda de Silva, whose run-a-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 34. He was caught by Anil Kumble. Prasad broke the 80-run stand.

The fourth-wicket pair put on 21. Marvan Atapattu, whose 153-ball innings included seven boundaries, scored 118. Singh and Kumble ran him out. Arjuna Ranatunga, Sri Lanka’s skipper, faced nine balls, scoring eight. He was unbeaten, as was Tillakaratne, who didn’t face a ball.

India conceded 16 extras. Sri Lanka scored 302 for the loss of four wickets off 50 overs. Tendulkar, who bowled five wicketless overs, conceded 28. Kumble, who bowled eight wicketless overs, conceded 50. Kuruvilla, who bowled nine wicketless overs, conceded 59.

Chauhan, who bowled 10 wicketless overs, conceded 64. Singh, who bowled nine overs, conceded 44. He picked up a wicket. Prasad, who bowled nine overs, conceded 50. He picked up a couple of scalps.

India’s openers put on 58. Sourav Ganguly, whose 26-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 31. He was run out by the de Silvas, Aravinda and Lanka. Singh, who faced four balls, scored a run. He was caught by Lanka. Chaminda Vaas broke the one-run stand.

The third-wicket pair put on a couple. Rahul Dravid, who faced a ball, scored a run. Sajeewa de Silva ran him out. Tendulkar, whose 28-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 27. He was caught by Muttiah Muralitharan. Vaas broke the three-run stand.

Mohammad Azharuddin, whose 117-ball innings included five boundaries, scored 111. He was unbeaten. Jadeja, whose 121-ball innings included eight boundaries and the only six of the innings, scored 119. He was caught by Vaas, who broke the 223-run stand.

The sixth-wicket pair had no reason to be in seventh heaven. Mongia, who faced a couple of balls, scored a run. Mahanama ran him out. Chauhan, who faced a couple of balls, scored a run. He was caught by Mahanama. Jayasuriya broke the two-run stand. Kumble, who didn’t face a ball, was unbeaten.

Sri Lanka conceded eight extras. India, who scored 300 for the loss of seven wickets off 50 overs, lost by just a couple of runs. Aravinda bowled a couple of wicketless overs, conceding 14. Ranatunga bowled four wicketless overs, conceding 25.

Sajeewa bowled eight wicketless overs, conceding 49. Muralitharan bowled nine wicketless overs, conceding 51. Kumar Dharmasena bowled 10 wicketless overs, conceding 40. Jayasuriya, who bowled seven overs, conceded 53. He picked up a wicket. Vaas, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 63. He picked up three scalps.

The Sri Lankans led the three-match series 1-0.
