India (Tendulk)are beaten by England

India made three changes to their playing eleven – Vinod Kambli, Nilesh Kulkarni and Debasis Mohanty made way for Navjot Singh Sidhu, Anil Kumble and Javagal Srinath. England made seven changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Michael Atherton, Neil Smith, Matthew Maynard, Chris Lewis, Darren Gough, Dominic Cork and Peter Martin made way for Nick Knight, Adam Hollioake (who was leading the team), Mark Ealham, Robert Croft, Dean Headley and a couple of One-day International debutants – Matthew Fleming and Dougie Brown.

On winning the toss, Sachin Tendulkar, India’s skipper, inserted England. Ali Brown, whose 25-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 18. He was caught by Sourav Ganguly. Abey Kuruvilla broke the 42-run stand.

Knight, whose 60-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and a six, scored 42. He was caught by Kumble. Rajesh Chauhan broke the 89-run stand. Graeme Hick, whose 42-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and a six, scored 32. Kuruvilla broke the 78-run partnership.

Alec Stewart, the player of the match, scored 116. His 111-ball innings included nine boundaries and a six. He was caught by Mohammad Azharuddin. The (Kumb)leggie broke the two-run stand. Hollioake, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored four. Kuruvilla broke the four-run stand.

The sixth-wicket pair put on three. Graham Thorpe, who faced four balls, scored three. Ajay Jadeja ran him out. Fleming, who faced 16 (Sa)balls, scored nine. He was caught by Karim. Srinath broke the 14-run stand.


The eighth-wicket pair put on five. Ealham, who faced 16 balls, scored nine. Tendulkar ran him out. Croft, whose eight-ball innings included a boundary, scored half-a-dozen. He was caught by Kuruvilla. Srinath broke the 11-run stand.

Dougie, who faced 11 balls, scored half-a-dozen. He was caught by Tendulkar. Srinath broke the two-run stand. Headley, who faced a ball, scored a run. He was unbeaten. India conceded four extras. England were dismissed for 250 off 49.5 overs.

Ganguly, who bowled a couple of overs, conceded 14. He was wicketless, as were Tendulkar, who bowled four overs, conceding 24, and Robin Singh, who bowled half-a-dozen overs, conceding 34.

Chauhan, who bowled nine overs, conceded 35. He picked up a wicket, as did Kumble, who bowled 10 overs, conceding 53. The Karnataka pacer who bowled 8.5 overs, conceded (Srina)thirty-seven. He picked up three scalps, as did Kuruvilla, who bowled 10 overs, conceding 50.

Karim, whose 34-ball innings included five boundaries, scored 29. He was caught by Croft. Headley broke the 60-run partnership. Ganguly, whose 41-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 29. Ealham broke the four-run stand.

Sidhu, who faced 13 balls, scored three. Ealham broke the one-run stand. Azharuddin, who faced 19 balls, scored three. He was caught by Headley. Hollioake broke the nine-run stand. Jadeja, whose 69-ball innings included a boundary, scored 50. He was caught by Thorpe. Fleming broke the 108-run stand.

Singh, whose 14-ball innings included a six, scored a dozen. He was trapped leg before wicket by Fleming, who broke the 25-run stand. The seventh-wicket pair put on 14. Kumble, who faced  three balls, scored a couple. Knight and Stewart ran him out.

Tendulkar, whose 87-ball innings included four boundaries and a couple of sixes, scored 91. He was stumped by Stewart. Fleming broke the 11-run stand. Srinath had no reason to be in seventh heaven – he scored just three. Headley broke the five-run stand.

Chauhan faced a dozen balls, scoring as many. Fleming broke the six-run stand. Kuruvilla, who faced a ball, scored a run. He was unbeaten. England conceded eight extras. India, who were dismissed for 243 off 49.3 overs, lost by seven runs.

Croft, who bowled five overs, conceded 32. He was wicketless, as was Dougie, who bowled seven overs, conceding 44. Hollioake bowled nine overs, including a maiden. He conceded 38, picking up a wicket.

Headley bowled nine overs, conceding 38. He picked up two wickets, as did Ealham, who bowled 10 overs, conceding 43. Fleming, who bowled 9.3 overs, conceded 45. He picked up four scalps.
