Rain stops Sri Lanka's (Sach)innIn(dia)gs

India made one change to their playing eleven – Anil Kumble made way for Nilesh Kulkarni. Sri Lanka made three changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Chaminda Vaas, Muttiah Muralitharan and Sajeewa de Silva made way for Ruwan Kalpage, Dulip Liyanage and Ravindra Pushpakumara.

Arjuna Ranatunga, Sri Lanka’s skipper, won the toss, inserting the Indians. Sourav Ganguly, whose 20-ball innings included a boundary, scored 14. He was caught by Roshan Mahanama. Pushpakumara broke the 30-run partnership.

Tendulkar, India’s skipper, scored 27. His 31-ball (Sach)innings included four boundaries. He was caught by Ranatunga. Liyanage broke the 14-run stand. Rahul Dravid, whose 79-ball innings included nine boundaries, scored 78. He was caught by Kalpage. Aravinda de Silva broke the 162-run partnership.

Singh, whose 102-ball (Rob)innings included 11 boundaries and a six, scored 100. He was caught by Pushpakumara. Kumar Dharmasena broke the 62-run partnership. Mohammad Azharuddin, whose 41-ball innings included a six, scored 34. Aravinda broke the five-run stand.

The sixth-wicket pair put on a run. Nayan Mongia, who faced a ball, scored a run. Liyanage ran him out. The seventh-wicket pair put on four. Rajesh Chauhan, who faced three balls, scored a couple. Mahanama and Lanka de Silva ran him out.

Ajay Jadeja wasn’t in seventh heaven, because he scored half-a-dozen. He was stumped by Lanka. Aravinda broke the three-run stand. The ninth-wicket pair put on seven. Abey Kuruvilla, who faced nine balls, scored three. Marvan Atapattu ran him out.

Kulkarni, who faced five balls, scored seven. He was unbeaten, as was Venkatesh Prasad, who faced a ball, scoring two. Sri Lanka conceded 19 extras. India scored 291 for the loss of nine wickets off 50 overs.

Sanath Jayasuriya, who bowled nine wicketless overs, conceded 40. Kalpage, who bowled half-a-dozen wicketless overs, conceded 44. Upul Chandana, who bowled three wicketless overs, conceded 22.

Pushpakumara, who bowled half-a-dozen overs, conceded 47. He picked up a wicket. Liyanage, who bowled seven overs, conceded 26. He picked up a wicket. Dharmasena, who bowled nine overs, conceded 51. He picked up a wicket. Aravinda bowled 10 overs, conceding 55. He picked up three scalps.

Jayasuriya, whose 38-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries and four sixes, scored 68. He was caught by Dravid. Kuruvilla broke the 85-run partnership. The second-wicket pair put on 11. Atapattu, whose 28-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 21. Dravid and Mongia ran him out.

Ranatunga faced a ball, scoring a run. He was caught by Chauhan. Singh broke the one-run stand. Mahanama, who faced four balls, scored eight. His runs came by way of boundaries. He was caught by Dravid. Singh broke the 19-run stand.

Kalpage, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored a run. He was caught by Kulkarni, who broke the six-run stand. Aravinda, whose 29-ball innings included a six, scored 22. He was caught by Prasad. Singh broke the 10-run stand.

Lanka, who broke the 10-run stand, scored half-a-dozen. He was unbeaten, as was Chandana, who didn’t face a ball. India conceded half-a-dozen extras. Sri Lanka scored 132 for the loss of six wickets off 19 overs.

Chauhan and Prasad bowled three wicketless overs apiece. While the former conceded 31, the latter conceded 21. Kulkarni and Singh bowled four overs apiece. The former, whose spell included a maiden, conceded 15, picking up a wicket. The latter, who conceded 20, picked up three wickets. Kuruvilla bowled five overs, conceded 43. He picked up a wicket.

There was no result, as rain interrupted the match. The hosts – who were leading the three-match series 2-0 – were set a revised target of 195 in 25 overs. Bad light halted play at the end of their 19th over. A new match was played the next day.
