SadLy, the Indians (Tendulk)aren’t merry

India made just one change to their playing eleven – Debasis Mohanty made way for One-day International debutant Hrishikesh Kanitkar. Sri Lanka also made a change to theirs – Marvan Atapattu made way for Hashan Tillakaratne.

Arjuna Ranatunga, Sri Lanka’s skipper, chose to bat on winning the toss. Although he was unbeaten, Sanath Jayasuriya, who scored six, wasn’t in seventh heaven. However, his innings included a boundary.

Romesh Kaluwitharana, who faced (Srina)three balls, didn’t get off the mark. Four balls into the match, Javagal broke the one-run stand. Roshan Mahanama, who faced nine balls, scored five. He was unbeaten.

India conceded half-a-dozen extras. Sri Lanka scored 17 for the loss of one wicket off three overs. Srinath, who bowled a couple of overs, conceded half-a-dozen. He picked up the only wicket to fall. Rajesh, who bowled (Chauh)an over, had no reason to be in seventh heaven – he was wicketless.

After the third over, the captains of both the teams felt the pitch was too dangerous for the players to play on. The match was then called off by the match referee, Ahmed Ebrahim of Zimbabwe.

By no means was it a merry Christmas for either the Indians, who were playing their penultimate One-day International of the year, or the visitors. However, the former led the three-match series 1-0.
