India (Tendulk)are winless; WI advance

India made a couple of changes to their playing eleven – Robin Singh and Abey Kuruvilla made way for Rahul Dravid and Venkatesh Prasad. The West Indies made five changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Jimmy Adams, Roland Holder, Courtney Browne, Ottis Gibson and Curtly Ambrose made way for Philo Wallace, Phil Simmons, Rawl Lewis, David Williams and Mervyn Dillon.

On winning the toss, Sachin Tendulkar, India’s skipper, inserted the West Indians. Wallace, whose 22-ball innings included a boundary, scored eight. (Srina)Thirty-eight balls into the match, he was caught by Sourav Ganguly. Javagal broke the 26-run stand.

Stuart Williams, the player of the match, scored 105. His 149-ball innings included 10 boundaries. He was unbeaten. Brian Lara, whose 20-ball innings included four boundaries and a six, scored 23. Forty-five balls later, he was caught by Anil Kumble. Rajesh Chauhan broke the 37-run stand.

Carl Hooper, whose 51-ball innings included a boundary, scored 38. Seventeen balls later, he was caught by Mohammad Azharuddin. Ganguly broke the 71-run partnership.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul, whose 25-ball innings included a six, scored 16. Forty-three balls later, he was caught by Ajay Jadeja. Chauhan broke the 30-run stand.

Simmons, whose 25-ball innings included a boundary, scored 16. Fifty balls later, Kumble broke the 38-run stand. Franklyn Rose, whose 12-ball innings included a six, scored 14. Nineteen balls later, Srinath broke the 25-run stand. Lewis, who faced a ball, scored a run. He was unbeaten.

India conceded eight extras. The West Indies scored 229 for the loss of six wickets off 50 overs. Tendulkar, who bowled four overs, conceded 17. He was wicketless, as was Prasad, who bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 39.

Ganguly, who bowled seven overs, conceded 38. He picked up a wicket, as did Kumble, who bowled 10 overs, conceding 52. Srinath bowled nine overs, including a maiden. He conceded 48, picking up a couple of wickets. Chauhan bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 30, picking up a couple of wickets.

Navjot Singh Sidhu, who faced 43 balls, scored 25. A hundred and sixteen balls into the chase, he was caught by Wallace. Lewis broke the 87-run stand. Ganguly, whose 94-ball innings included five boundaries and a six, scored 70. Fifty-three balls later, he was stumped by David. Hooper broke the 39-run partnership.

The third-wicket pair put on one. Tendulkar, who faced a couple of balls, scored a run. Three balls later, Lewis and David ran him out. The fourth-wicket pair put on nine. Azharuddin, who faced eight balls, scored four. Lewis and Hooper ran him out.

Dravid, whose 45-ball innings included a boundary, scored 31. Half-a-dozen balls later, Hooper broke the four-run stand. Jadeja, who faced 21 balls, scored eight. Twenty-nine balls later, Hooper broke the 22-run stand.

Karim, whose 22-(Sa)ball innings included a boundary and a six, scored 26. Seventeen balls later, Chanderpaul broke the 15-run stand. Kumble, who faced a dozen balls, scored half-a-dozen. Nine balls later, he was caught by Chanderpaul, who broke the 10-run stand.

Srinath, who faced five balls, scored four. The next ball, he was dismissed by Chanderpaul. Chauhan, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. He was unbeaten. Prasad, who faced four balls, scored a run. Five balls later, Hooper broke the one-run stand.

The West Indies conceded 12 extras. India, who were bundled out for 188 off 42.2 overs, lost by 41 runs. Rose and Dillon bowled half-a-dozen wicketless overs apiece. While the former conceded 35, the latter conceded 30.

Courtney Walsh, the West Indian skipper, bowled seven wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 24. Lewis, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 38. He picked up a wicket. Chanderpaul, who bowled five overs, conceded 18. He picked up three wickets. Hooper, who bowled 8.2 overs, conceded 37. He picked up four scalps.

The West Indians advanced to the final.
