India (Sharm)made
four changes to theiR Playing (Pat)eleven – Virender Sehwag, Robin Uthappa, Singh
and Ishant made way for One-day International debutant Virat Kohli, Harbhajan
Singh, Zaheer Khan and Munaf. Sri Lanka made no changes to the eleven that last
played the Indians.
On winning the
toss, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, India’s skipper, chose to bat. Their openers didn’t
get off the mark. Gautam Gambhir, who faced a couple of balls, didn’t open his
account. A couple of balls into the match, he Vaas dismissed by Chaminda.
Kohli, whose
22-ball innings included a boundary, scored a dozen. Forty-five balls later, he
was trapped leg before wicket by Nuwan Kulasekara, who broke the 23-run stand.
The second
Powerplay of India’s innings was between the 11th and the 15th
over. Suresh Raina, whose 35-ball innings included a couple of boundaries,
scored 17. Twenty-four balls after Kohli’s dismissal, he was caught by Chamara
Silva. Kulasekara broke the 13-run stand.
The third
Powerplay of India’s innings was between the 16th and the 20th
over. They scored 50 off 15.4 overs (95 balls). Sri Lanka had conceded an extra
at that point.
Sixteen overs into
the match, the first drinks break was taken. India had scored 50 for the loss
of three wickets at that point. While Yuvraj Singh was batting on eight, Rohit
Sharma was batting on a dozen.
Yuvraj, whose
30-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and a six, eventually scored
23. Forty-seven balls later, he was (Men)dismissed by Ajantha, the player of
the match, who broke the 37-run stand.
Rohit, whose
31-ball innings included a boundary and a six, eventually scored 19. Five balls

broke the two-run stand.
Dhoni, who faced
28 balls, scored just half-a-dozen. Forty-one balls later, he was caught by
Jayawardene. Mendis broke the 12-run stand. The seventh-wicket didn’t get off
the mark. Irfan Pathan, who faced 19 balls, had no reason to be in seventh
heaven – seven balls after Dhoni’s dismissal, he was trapped leg before wicket
by Muttiah Muralitharan.
Thirty-one overs
into the match, the second drinks break was taken. India had scored 92 for the
loss of seven wickets at that point. Both Harbhajan and Khan were batting on a
couple apiece.
India scored 100 off
34.4 overs (209 balls). Sri Lanka had conceded five extras at that point. Khan,
who faced 38 balls, eventually scored a dozen. Fifty-one balls after Pathan’s
dismissal, he was caught by Thushara. Muralitharan broke the 20-run stand.
Harbhajan, who
faced 28 balls, eventually scored a dozen too. Thirty-one balls later, he was
caught by Kumar Sangakkara. Muralitharan broke the 10-run stand. Pragyan Ojha,
whose 29-ball innings included a boundary, scored 16. He was unbeaten.
Patel, whose
14-ball innings included a boundary and a six, scored 15. Twenty-three balls
after Harbhajan, he was (Men)dismissed by the spinner, who broke the 29-run
stand. Sri Lanka eventually conceded seven extras. India were bundled out for
146 off 46 overs.
Sanath Jayasuriya
bowled five wicketless overs, including a maiden. He was wicketless. Thushara,
who bowled half-a-dozen overs, conceded 18. He picked up a wicket, as did Vaas,
who bowled nine overs, conceding 34.
Kulasekara, who
bowled seven overs, conceded 23. He picked up a couple of wickets. Mendis
bowled nine overs, including four maidens. He conceded 21, picking up three wickets.
Muralitharan bowled 10 overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 37,
picking up three scalps.
Jayasuriya, whose
14-ball innings included a boundary, scored 10. Thirty-eight balls into the chase,
he was caught by Pathan. Patel broke the 18-run stand.
The second
Powerplay of Sri Lanka’s innings was between the 11th and the 15th
over. Sangakkara, whose 41-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored
19. Thirty-nine balls after Jayasuriya’s dismissal, he was caught by Patel, who
broke the 27-run stand.
Sri Lanka scored
50 off 14.2 overs (88 balls). As far as the number of extras they had conceded
at that point, India had no reason to be in seventh heaven.
The third Powerplay
of Sri Lanka’s innings was between the 16th and the 20th
over. Sixteen overs into the chase, the second drinks break was taken. India
had scored 57 for the loss of a couple of wickets at that point. While Jayawardene
was batting on 17, Chamara Kapugedere was batting on four.
The third-wicket
pair put on 50 off 69 balls. While Jayawardene’s contribution to the
partnership was 27, Kapugedera’s contribution to the partnership was 17. Extras’
contribution to the partnership was four.
Sri Lanka scored 100
off 23.5 overs (148 balls). India had conceded a dozen extras at that point.
Jayawardene’s half-century
– which included half-a-dozen boundaries – came off 70 balls. The third-wicket
pair put on 100 off 134 balls. While Jayawardene’s contribution to the
partnership was 49, Kapugedera’s contribution to the partnership was 44. Extras’
contribution to the partnership was seven.
Jayawardene, whose
82-ball innings included seven boundaries, eventually scored 61. He was
unbeaten, as was Kapugedera, who eventually scored 45. His 72-ball innings
included four boundaries.
India eventually
conceded a dozen extras. Sri Lanka, who scored 147 for the loss of a couple of
wickets off 34.5 overs, won by eight wickets off 91 balls to spare. Raina bowled
a couple of wicketless overs, conceding 11. Rohit bowled 2.5 wicketless overs,
conceding 11. Ojha bowled three wicketless overs, conceding nine.
Harbhajan, who
bowled four wicketless overs, conceded 18. Pathan and Khan (whose spell included
a maiden) bowled seven wicketless overs apiece. While the former conceded 35,
the latter conceded 24. Patel, who bowled nine overs, conceded 32. He picked up
both the wickets that fell.
Sri Lanka led the
five-match series 1-0.
