The (Sach)Indians suffer a losSAgain

India made no changes to their playing eleven. South Africa made three changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Andrew Hudson, Pat Symcox and Craig Matthews made way for debutant Adam Bacher, Jacques Kallis and Paul Adams.

Sachin Tendulkar, India’s skipper, won the toss, choosing to bat. Their openers did not get off the mark. Sourav Ganguly, who faced four balls, didn’t open his account. Bacher – the nephew of former South African captain and administrator Dr Ali Bacher – ran him out.

Javagal, who faced 14 balls, scored (Srina)three. He was caught by David Richardson. Needless to say, Kallis, the player of the match, was in seventh heaven. Tendulkar, who faced 14 balls, scored just a run. Allan Donald broke the four-run stand.

Rahul Dravid, whose 104-ball innings included three boundaries and a six, scored 50. He was caught by Hansie Cronje, South Africa’s skipper. Donald broke the 105-run stand. Mohammad Azharuddin, whose 93-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 57. He was caught by Jonty Rhodes. Donald broke the two-run stand.

Saba Karim, whose 16-ball innings included a boundary, scored eight. He was caught by Bacher. Adams broke the 12-run stand. Ajay Jadeja, whose 14-ball innings included a boundary and a six, scored 15. He was trapped leg before wicket by Kallis, who broke the 17-run stand.

Singh, whose run-a-ball (Rob)innings included a six, scored 18. He was caught by Donald. Shaun Pollock broke the 21-run stand. Anil Kumble, who faced 18 balls, scored 11. He was unbeaten. The ninth-wicket pair put on 11. Salil Ankola, whose six-ball innings included a boundary, scored eight. Richardson ran him out.

South Africa conceded eight extras. India scored 179 for the loss of nine wickets off 50 overs. Cronje, who bowled four overs, conceded 17. He was wicketless, as was Lance Klusener, who bowled eight overs, conceding 28.

Pollock and Adams bowled 10 overs, including a maiden, each, picking up a wicket each. While the former conceded 37, the latter conceded 31. Kallis bowled eight overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 23, picking up a couple of wickets. Donald bowled 10 overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 40, picking up three wickets.

Gary Kirsten, whose seven-ball innings included a boundary, scored half-a-dozen. He was caught by Azharuddin. Venkatesh Prasad broke the eight-run stand. Bacher, whose 34-ball innings included a boundary, scored 13. The (Kumb)leggie broke the 39-run stand.

Daryll Cullinan, whose 42-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 21. He was caught by Jadeja. Singh broke the 42-run stand. Kallis, whose 127-ball innings included eight boundaries, scored 79. He was caught by Ankola. Singh broke the 63-run stand.

Rhodes, whose 50-ball innings included a boundary, scored 29. He was unbeaten, as was Cronje, who scored 20. His 18-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and the only six of the innings.

India conceded 12 extras. South Africa, who scored 180 for the loss of four wickets off 45.1 overs, won by six wickets with 29 balls to spare. Srinath bowled 7.1 wicketless overs, including a couple of boundaries. He conceded 24. Ankola, who bowled 10 wicketless overs, conceded 42.

Prasad and Kumble bowled nine overs each, picking up a wicket apiece. While the former conceded 41, the latter conceded 30. Singh, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 34. He picked up a couple of scalps.
