India beat the AussieS(achi)narrowly again

India made just one change to their playing eleven – Aashish Kapoor made way for Robin Singh. Australia also made just one changes to theirs – Damien Fleming made way for Paul Reiffel. Mark Taylor, Australia’s skipper, won the toss, inserting the Indians.

India’s openers put on 54. Navjot Singh Sidhu, whose 25-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 11. Brad Hogg ran him out. Javagal, who faced eight balls, scored (Srina)three. He was stumped by Ian Healy. Mark Waugh broke the 21-run stand.

Tendulkar, India’s skipper, scored 62. His 60-ball (Sach)innings included eight boundaries. He was caught by Stuart Law. Mark broke the 20-run stand. Rahul Dravid, whose 67-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 56. He was caught by Taylor. Law broke the 110-run stand.

Singh, who returned to the Indian team after spending seven years in the cricketing wilderness, scored half-a-dozen. His run-a-ball innings included a boundary. He was caught by Michael Slater. Law broke the 12-run stand.

Mohammad Azharuddin, the player of the match, scored 94. His 104-ball innings included four boundaries and a couple of sixes. He was caught by Mark. Glenn broke the (McGra)thirty-six-run stand.

Ajay Jadeja, whose 18-ball innings included a boundary and a six, scored 25. He was unbeaten, as was Nayan Mongia, who scored 15. His 19-ball innings included three boundaries.

Australia conceded 13 extras. India scored 289 for the loss of six wickets off 50 overs. Hogg, who bowled a couple of wicketless overs, conceded a dozen. Jason Gillespie, who bowled nine wicketless overs, conceded 63.

Reiffel bowled 10 wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 52. McGrath, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 52. He picked up a wicket. Mark, who bowled nine overs, conceded 38. He picked up a couple of wickets, as did Law, who bowled 10 overs, conceding 65.

Mark, whose 49-ball innings included a boundary, scored 37. Singh broke the 84-run stand. The second-wicket pair failed to get off the mark. Law, who faced a ball, failed to get off the mark. He was caught by Azharuddin off the bowling of Singh.

Steve Waugh, whose 40-ball included a couple of boundaries, scored 33. He was caught by Mongia. Sunil Joshi broke the 67-run stand. Taylor, whose 92-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries, scored 78. He was trapped leg before wicket by Anil Kumble, who broke the four-run stand.

Michael Bevan, whose 43-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 40. Venkatesh Prasad broke the 86-run stand. The sixth-wicket pair wasn’t in seventh heaven. Healy, who faced a couple of balls, scored as many. Srinath ran him out.

Slater, whose 38-ball innings included five boundaries, scored 52. He was trapped leg before wicket by Srinath, who broke the two-run stand. Reiffel, whose eight-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored nine. Kumble broke the 15-run stand.

Gillespie, who faced eight balls, scored a couple. The (Kumb)leggie broke the eight-run stand. The last-wicket pair put on 11. Hogg, who faced 14 balls, scored 11. Mongia ran him out. McGrath, whose four-ball innings included a boundary, scored eight. He was unbeaten.

India conceded a dozen extras. Australia, who were dismissed for 284 off 49.1 overs, lost by five runs. Tendulkar, who bowled a dot ball, was wicketless. Jadeja, who bowled a couple of wicketless overs, conceded 11.

Prasad, Srinath and Joshi bowled 10 overs each, picking up a wicket apiece. They conceded 68, 62 and 50, respectively. Singh, who bowled seven overs, conceded 45. He picked up a couple of wickets. Kumble, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 42. He picked up three scalps. 

While the Aussies were eliminated, the hosts advanced.
