India lose; SA(chi)nail another final

India made a couple of changes to their playing eleven – Nayan Mongia and Sunil Joshi made way for Saba Karim and Salil Ankola. South Africa made just one change to the eleven that last played the Indians – Pat Symcox made way for Rudi Bryson. Hansie Cronje, South Africa’s skipper, won the toss, choosing to bat.

Andrew Hudson, whose (Srina)thirty-three-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 19. He was caught by Karim. Javagal broke the 44-run stand. Gary Kirsten, whose 69-ball innings included five boundaries, scored 51. He was caught by Rahul Dravid, the player of the match. Robin Singh broke the 86-run stand.

The third-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Jacques Kallis, whose 70-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 49. He was trapped leg before wicket by Singh. Jonty Rhodes, whose 45-ball (Sach)innings included three boundaries, scored 41. Tendulkar, India’s skipper, broke the 91-run stand.

Cronje, the player of the series, faced 14 balls, scoring 10. Venkatesh Prasad broke the 21-run stand. The sixth-wicket pair failed to get off the mark. Shaun Pollock, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. He was trapped leg before wicket by Prasad. Daryll Cullinan, whose 51-ball innings included four boundaries and a six, scored 60. Anil Kumble broke the two-run stand.

Lance Klusener, whose 23-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 16. The (Kumb)leggie broke the 22-run stand. David Richardson, whose 13-ball innings included a six, scored 15. He was unbeaten, as was Bryson, who faced a couple of balls, scoring as many.

India conceded 15 extras. South Africa scored 278 for the loss of eight wickets off 50 overs. Ankola, who never represented India again, bowled seven wicketless overs, conceding 50. Tendulkar, who bowled three overs, conceded 19. He picked up a wicket, as did Srinath, who bowled 10 overs, conceding 50.

Singh, Kumble and Prasad (whose spell included a maiden) bowled 10 overs each, picking up a couple of scalps apiece. They conceded 63, 45 and 43, respectively.

Owing to a rain interruption between the innings, India’s target was revised to 251 off 40 overs. Sourav Ganguly, who faced 10 balls, scored five. He was caught by Allan Donald. Pollock broke the 18-run stand. Tendulkar, whose 33-ball innings included seven boundaries and a six, scored 45. He was caught by Bryson. Cronje broke the 66-run stand.

Mohammad Azharuddin, whose 44-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 45. He was caught by Rhodes. Pollock broke the 81-run stand. Ajay Jadeja, whose 19-ball innings included a boundary and a six, scored 18. He was caught by Hudson. Klusener broke the 33-run stand.

Dravid, whose 94-ball innings included five boundaries and a six, scored 84. He was caught by Kirsten. Klusener broke the fifth-wicket stand, which was worth a dozen. The sixth-wicket pair put on 14. Singh, whose 17-ball innings included a boundary, scored 15. Cronje ran him out.

The seventh-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Karim, who faced 10 balls, scored three. He was dismissed by Donald. The eighth-wicket pair failed to get off the mark. Ankola, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. He was dismissed by Donald.

The ninth-wicket pair put on half-a-dozen. Kumble, whose five-ball innings included a boundary, scored six. Klusener ran him out. Srinath, who faced three balls, scored a run. He was caught by Cullinan. Donald broke the four-run stand. Prasad, who faced three balls, scored two. He was unbeaten.

South Africa conceded 10 extras. India, who were dismissed for 234 off 39.2 overs, lost by 17 runs. Kallis, who bowled three overs, conceded 18. He was wicketless, as was Bryson, who bowled seven overs, conceded 47.

Cronje bowled eight overs, conceding 35. He picked up a wicket. Pollock bowled half-a-dozen overs, conceding 39. He picked up a couple of wickets, as did Klusener, who bowled eight overs, conceding 42. Donald bowled 7.2 overs, conceding 48. He picked up three scalps.

The South Africans won the 1996/97 Standard Bank International One-day Series.
